Donald Trump charged the Secret Service nearly $ 10,200 for its use of guest rooms at his New Jersey golf club in May, newly released records indicate.
The charge in May at Trump National golf club in Bedminster, New Jersey amounted to $ 10,199.52 for an 18-day stay about $ 566 per night at the resort.
The Secret Service also released documents including a hotel request form covering the period from May 28 to July 1, as well as charges indicating a $ 3,400 resort charge amount for January, February and first part of May. The agency did not disclose the reason behind those charges, which were laid before Trumps arrived.
Charging rent from government -provided security detail is not new, as Trump often charges the Secret Service for rooms used by its agents, even during his presidency, according to the Washington Post .
Currently, there are no laws preventing Trump and his company from requesting secret Service rent payments on his properties, and rates are at the discretion of Trump Organizations. The Secret Service is required by law to pay whatever is necessary to rent rooms close to its clients.
Joe Biden was the only other protected person to charge rent to the Secret Service. During his presidency, Biden charged a monthly rent of $ 2,200 for its use of a small house on his Delaware property. However, since becoming president, Biden has not charged Secret Service rent.
The release of these bills was announced as New York state prosecutors announced criminal charges against the Trump Organization for dealing with the business. The company and chief financial officer Allen Weisselberg have been charged with tax -related crimes. Weisselberg and the company last week pleaded not guilty.
