Trump calls Mitch McConnell ‘Knucklehead’ for Undeleted Filibuster

If Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell became more of a political power, filibuster would be a thing of the past and Senator Joe Manchin would be a Republican, according to former President Donald Trump.

Once Trump’s greatest ally on Capitol Hill, McConnell broke the former president in his role in the chaos at the Capitol, a major offense in Trump’s view. “He’s a fool,” Trump said in an interview with Vanity Fair published Monday. “I don’t think he’s smart enough.”

One of Trump’s blows to McConnell was that he didn’t remove the filibuster when Republicans had the majority. In 2018, Trump pleaded with GOP members of Congress to change filibuster policies before Democrats took over the Senate, giving Senator Chuck Schumer a chance to destroy the majority -backed law blocking process.

“I tried to convince Mitch McConnell to remove the filibuster, to end it so we could get it all, and he was a knucklehead and he didn’t do it,” Trump told Vanity Fair.

McConnell pushed Trump’s request, saying the filibuster was not a “problem.” He considered the filibuster a way of helping to come up with a two-sided solution to the law and estimated nearly two-thirds of the Republican caucus would object to ending it.

The removal of the filibuster would allow the majority party to pass the law without any support from the minority party. Although tempting, because it can help guarantee a president’s agenda moves forward, McConnell said in 2018 that Republicans don’t always have a majority, so the filibuster explosion could give Democrats a way to ram into also through their agenda.

Manchin held on to his opposition to the removal of the filibuster and the moderate Democrat, at times, became a thorn in the side of the Democratic Party. The caucus could not afford to lose a single vote in the Senate and the moderate Democrat has forced members of his party to go to the negotiating table on more than one occasion.

A major vote for the Democratic agenda, Trump blamed McConnell for not convincing Manchin to join the Republican Party, according to Vanity Fair. The former president once praised Manchin for opposing filibuster reform and he is the only statewide Democrat to represent West Virginia in Congress.

While his moderate persona and propensity for being bipartisanship allowed him to remain in the position for 10 years, it is unclear how his most recent term will last among the constituents. Some Democrats see him as a force opposed to party values ​​and some Republicans want a member of their own party in office, because Manchin often ends up voting for Democrats despite his insistence. for compromise.

Along with calling McConnell “stupid” and a “knucklehead,” Trump disparagingly compares him to Meade Esposito, a Democratic Party leader who commanded respect.

“It’s like a baby versus an old football player with a brain on top of everything else,” Trump told Vanity Fair.
