He has to have it: Spike Lees Cannes takes it

CANNES: American director Spike Lee raised his eyebrows Wednesday in Cannes when he put up for sale merchandise of the film festival on his personal website.

The legendary director of “Do The Right Thing” is the first black person to preside over the jury of the biggest film festival in the world.

He launched with his very personal sense of style on the red carpet, sporting a tricolor beret to mark July 14 of Frances Bastille Day.

However, the Brooklyn-based filmmaker has been called out for listing signed postcards from the festival for 1.50 euros on his Instagram page for $ 100.

Photographer Samina Seyed, who has over 42,000 followers on the app, said, “Dear Spike, I know your signature is priceless … but $ 100 for your name on a postcard?”

Lee adorns festival posters throughout the Côte d’Azur resort town and is also featured on massive billboards promoting luxury Montblanc pens.

He also collaborated with Louis Vuitton for his Cannes wardrobe.

His website urges fans to buy the postcards to “celebrate the first black president of the jury in the festival’s 74-year history.”

He also says he is the first living person to appear on the official Cannes poster.

Lee, 64, spent much of the festival supporting black and minority artists and attended an early morning motivational breakfast for migrants who are making new lives in France.

AFP has contacted both the festival and Lee for comment, but received no immediate comment.
