Exhibition: ‘In America: A Lexicon of American Fashion’

The first of a year-long two-part extravaganza, ‘In America: A Lexicon of American Fashion’ features a look at 100 outfits dating from the 1940s to the present day, set in installation designs inspired by patchwork quilts. Drawing on an 1856 blanket in the museum’s American Wing created by Adeline Harris Sears, featuring a white silk diamond-shaped box signed by some of the most famous Americans of the time, the exhibit consists of white wrinkled squares – three-dimensional patchwork quilts – each each contains a specimen of American fashion history.

Organized into 12 sections that seek to define the emotional qualities of American fashion, such as Nostalgia, Belonging, Joy and Strength, each exhibit is accompanied by a headpiece designed by Stephen Jones that features a word that encapsulates the appropriate sentiment, thus forming a comprehensive visual. dictionary. Exhibition: ‘Christian Dior: Designer of Dreams’

When Christian Dior arrived in America for the first time in 1947, after debuting the controversial ‘New Look’, his tour of the country was met with some resistance by those surprised by his proposed silhouette. Now the entire history of the Paris label has come to the Brooklyn Museum in New York, with the American iteration of ‘Christian Dior: Designer of Dreams’, a blockbuster show held at the Musée des Arts Décoratifs in Paris, before moving to V&A in London.

The show dives into the history of design and language not only Monsieur Dior, but also the creative directors who succeeded him: Yves Saint Laurent, Marc Bohan, Gianfranco Ferré, John Galliano, Raf Simons and Maria Grazia Chiuri. Curated by Florence Müller, curator of the Avenir Foundation’s textile and fashion arts at the Denver Museum of Art, in collaboration with Matthew Yokobosky, senior curator of fashion and material culture at the Brooklyn Museum, the exhibition also places a focus on the maison’s relationship with America, and looks at the central atrium of the Beaux location. -Arts Court redesigned as an enchanting garden.

‘Ravishing: The Rose in Fashion’, featuring 130 items, including 18th century hand-woven and embroidered silk, a large collection of rare rose-clad hats, and clothing by Comme des Garçons, Charles James and Gucci, and explores the symbolism of the rose in various colours, such as red, pink and black. The introduction to the show includes more than 75 original photographic portraits of people wearing roses, both real and artificial, dating from the 1850s to the 1920s, when the flowers were used as a common transformative prop. right
