The Clippers won bronze in the ACAC women’s basketball championship in thrilling fashion

Heading into the bronze medal game in the women’s basketball championship Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference, the Briecrest Clippers have stood the test of time.

A massive comeback to win their first game, another massive comeback almost to victory in their second. As a result, they are more than ready for any bronze medal game against the St. Louisians. Mary’s Lightning to be thrown at them.

Now they’re leaving with the first women’s basketball medal in team history — and it’s once again in its most dramatic fashion.

Trailing 54-46 heading into the fourth quarter, the Clippers rallied to tie the game 62-62 with two minutes left. That set the stage for one last drive and one last chance with the score tied at 64-64, eight seconds on the clock and Briecrest’s possession under the Lightning basket. .

Clippers second-year guard Dori Sunderland would run the length of the green and into the paint before releasing Eve Duerksen down the right, and the Briercrest rookie would make no mistake, rebounding in traffic for a 66-64 lead and one second left on the clock.

St Mary’s couldn’t find the magic at the entrance, and Briecrest got his medal.

As she has done all season, Amber Fichtner led on the scoreboard, providing 15 points and 11 rebounds, while Brooklyn Martens contributed 14 points and added 10 rebounds. Maddison Beattie also contributed 15 points. Sunderland’s assist was his fourth of the game.

The Clippers men’s hockey team saw their season end Sunday afternoon with a 2-1 loss to NAIT Ooks in game three and the decider of their best-of-three-game quarter-final series.

The loss marked the second game in a row. NAIT defeated Briercrest 2-1 after winning by the same score in Game 2 on Saturday night.

Holding on to a 1-0 lead after Daine Milgate scored with 5:02 left in the second half, the Clippers would see NAIT score two goals in the third — including the game winner with 2:11 left — as the Ooks pulled away from win 2 -1.

Joshua Lazowski scored both goals for NAIT.

Dominik Tmej saved 33 shots in the loss.
