Safe Kids Kansas and US Coast Guard hold a life jacket fashion show to promote water safety

TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW) – Topeka Zoo hosted a unique fashion show on Monday featuring children wearing unsinkable clothes.

The event was sponsored by Safe Kids Kansas and the Coast Guard to showcase the different types of life jackets available for children of all ages and to emphasize the importance of wearing them while in the water.

In addition to life jackets, Safe Kids Director Cherie Sage said adult supervision is very important to keep children safe in the water. Whether you have kids in a tub or wading pool, or you’re in a city pool, lake, or even the ocean, it’s important for adults to keep an eye on children at all times, says Sage. Drowning happens so quickly and silently, so your full attention is the safest thing.

According to Safe Kids Kansas, children ages one to four and teens ages 14 to 19 are at the highest risk of drowning.
