After behind Mississippi in COVID vaccinations last week, Alabama remains last in the country.
The state took a key milestone this week, as 33.4% or more than a third of the state’s population are now fully immunized, according to the Centers for Disaster Control and Prevention.
But vaccinations in Alabama have almost slowed, falling below 5,000 doses administered per day for the ninth consecutive day as of Tuesday.

At the current rate, Alabama will not meet President Biden’s summer target of 70% of adults having at least one stroke until next year.
The gap between the rest of the country and Alabama is widening. According to the CDC, more than 48% of the national population is now fully vaccinated. And coronavirus cases are on the rise in Alabama after the July 4 vacation. The most contagious Delta strain is here, accounting for over 70% of recent samples in an Alabama sequencing lab.

Although Alabama still beats four states in terms of the percentage of the population that has received at least one dose of a series of vaccines. At 40.8%, Alabama is doing slightly better in this statistic, ahead of Mississippi, Louisiana, Idaho and Wyoming.
Using the most recent population estimates from the US Census Bureau, no county in the state has fully immunized more than 37% of its population. Lowndes County, in the state’s black belt region, is the closest, at 36.9%.
Two of Alabama’s most populous counties follow closely behind. Madison County, home to Huntsville, is the second largest in the state with 36.8% of its population fully vaccinated. And Jefferson County, home to Birmingham and Alabama’s most populous county, is third at 36.2%.

Only 22 of Alabama’s 67 counties have met the 30% immunization threshold, according to data from the Alabama Department of Public Health and United States Census Bureau.
Meanwhile, cases have increased in nearly every county in Alabama over the past month and a half. You can see how each county is doing on cases and vaccinations in the table below.
