The new sequel brought in $2.6 million from Imax screens in China, which represented 9.1% of all weekend sales. This makes it the highest-grossing domestic animation title ever indexed in Emacs in China, beating out 2019’s hit “Ne Zha”.

The film is the latest work from the ever-improving domestic animation studio Light Chaser, once again using a video game-like aesthetic to tell the constantly re-enacted tale dating back to the Tang Dynasty. The tale tells the story of a serpent who develops supernatural powers after achieving immortality and becomes able to transform into women. They encounter different experiences after one of them falls happily in love with a human but is shocked when her snake’s identity is suddenly revealed.

In second place this week was the national epidemic movie “Chinese Doctors”. It made another $17.5 million to total $176 million from Maoyan projects that would total $211 million – quite possibly making it the most successful nationalist film celebrating the centenary of the Communist Party this month.

The local animated adventure “Agent Backhom: Kings Bear” came in third place with $4.77 million in the weekend. It was supposed to be launched for the first time last February, but was postponed due to the pandemic. After more than a year of promotion, she was able to participate in the local comedy “The Day We Lit Up The Sky”. It was later delayed with $3.19 million its second weekend.

The story continues

New Shanghai-set youth drama Top of the City, which sees men in knight armor fighting each other atop the city’s tallest skyscraper in order to rescue a sick child, has skyrocketed its inception to lower heights by $1.5. Million debut, reaching fifth place.

Yet she beat the weekend of $1.18 million for the “1921” sponsored click. The big-budget, star-studded show has grossed just $74.6 million so far, with its appeal waning fairly quickly despite receiving top billing and a huge promotional boost from Chinese media. This week, retelling the history of the Communist Party’s founding is only a small step ahead of a local animated film aimed at very young children, whose name translates to “Chiao Tiger’s Adventures in Magic Island.” This film spread to sixth place with a start of $1.13 million for three days.

The Chinese box office struggled during the usually active months of June and July in the absence of strong domestic or foreign films. There are no other films that have made over a million dollars this week.
