Google Voice is getting many new features over the next few weeks, as Google is showing signs once again that it hasn’t forgotten the important alternative phone app that many of us have used for years to help manage multiple phone numbers under one line.
In a blog post for Workspace customers, Google laid out 4 features that will add improvements to the calling experience (or missed calls), as well as managing text messages.
The first two changes include calls, with Google Voice coming soon to provide reasons for missed calls and also reasons for dropped calls. Once the update arrives, if you’ve missed a call and can’t figure out why, tapping on that missed call will now give you a reason to think it did, which could just mean that the specific phone you were using has Voice turned off or Do Not Disturb enabled.
For dropped calls, the same situation applies, where Google will try to explain why you dropped, such as poor internet connection. You will be prompted with repair options, including switching to your carrier number and then quickly calling back.
Another great new feature for those who want to send text messages. Google is finally adding a multi-select delete option. For the longest time, Google allowed you to long press on messages and then multiple archives, but now we will be able to delete them completely. This may only be a web app feature at the moment – Google hasn’t specified this.
Finally, for iOS users, Google is doing something with caller ID and forwarding. I have now read the explanation from them six times and have no idea what the hell they are talking about. So here’s the text and I’ll let you try to figure out what it means:
Google Voice customers using iOS now have a setting that allows them to see their Google Voice number as a caller ID when a call arrives at a number associated with Google Voice. When this setting is turned on, you’ll see the number you’ve associated with Google Voice as your caller ID.
For Google Workspace users, these changes are mostly available immediately away from the causes of missed calls, which can take up to two weeks.
