For the second time in three years, the Los Angeles Lakers did their best to earn a star.
On Thursday, the Lakers agreed to exchange Kyle Kuzma, Kentavius Caldwell Bob, Montrezel Harrell and No. 22 pick (Kentucky Isaiah Jackson) for the Washington Wizards for Russell Westbrook, a second-round pick in 2024 and a second-round pick in 2028, The Athletic reported. The deal won’t be official until August 6, when the NBA suspension ends and Kuzma’s three-year, $40 million contract extension begins.
The trade gave the Lakers their third All-Star award alongside LeBron James and Anthony Davis, cementing the shot-making and playmaking industry on the roster. Los Angeles has been following a great move, ideally for a goalkeeper, as Athletic’s Sam Amick reported earlier this week. Westbrook is checking this box, even if it fits him on the court, James and Davis aren’t quite as smooth.
Westbrook, 32 (he will turn 33 in November), has recently played some of the best basketball of his career in Houston and Washington. He jumped during the second half of last season, averaging 23.0 points, 14.0 assists and 13.
