All you need to know!

At Google I/O 2021, Google announced that it will partner with Samsung to bring to life a platform that hasn’t seen any noticeable updates in a long time – Wear OS. Samsung then announced that all future smartwatches launched by the brand will run Wear OS instead of the proprietary Tizen OS found in its past and current smartwatches. This is a big step because users will now get app and ecosystem support for Android and Wear OS along with the performance, stability, and battery life gains from Samsung’s experience with Tizen on the Galaxy Watch.

Reserve your Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 3 / Z Flip 3

The first product of this partnership between Google and Samsung is scheduled to be unveiled on August 11, 2021, at the Unpacked event organized by Samsung. Samsung has confirmed that it will launch its new generation of foldable phones – the Galaxy Z Fold 3 and Galaxy Z Flip 3 early next month, and if there are any leaks and rumors, the event will also have a slide for the new Galaxy Watch. 4 plus Galaxy Buds 2.

If you’re excited about Samsung’s new wearable, here’s everything we know about it so far and what you can expect from the watch.

Samsung Galaxy Watch 4: Release date

The Galaxy Watch 4 is expected to be launched at Samsung’s Unpacked event on August 11, 2021. Of course, the highlight of the show will be the Galaxy Z Fold 3, Samsung’s third foldable gen, followed by the Galaxy Z Flip 3 for all the shell lovers out there. Although there is no official confirmation about the launch of the Galaxy Watch 4 alongside the two foldable devices, there are several leaks from accurate sources such as Evan Blass or evleaks claiming that Samsung will launch the Galaxy Watch 4. It is expected that the Galaxy Buds 2 will be launched with these devices.

Samsung Galaxy Watch 4: Variants and Prices

While there was only one type of Galaxy Watch expected at first, it appears that another type of Galaxy Watch 4 may be out there called the Galaxy Watch 4 Classic. This means that there can be two different versions of the Galaxy Watch 4 that you can expect to release:

Galaxy Watch 4 Galaxy Watch 4 Classic

The regular Galaxy Watch 4 will likely be a replacement for the Galaxy Watch Active 2 and the Classic Edition is a successor to the Galaxy Watch 3. We’ll get better clarity on this soon but at this point, it’s safe to say that you can expect more than one wearable to be released.

In terms of size, the Galaxy Watch 4 may come in two variants – 42mm and 44mm. The Galaxy Watch 4 Classic is expected to come in two sizes as well – 44mm and 46mm. Users can choose what best suits the size and nature of their wrist.

In terms of pricing, we don’t have any specific information yet but just a couple of weeks ago the Galaxy Watch 4 was spotted on Amazon Canada and the listing mentioned a price of CAD$309.85 for the 42mm variant, which translates to around $249 in the US. Meanwhile, the classic 44mm variant is listed for $427.73 CAD or roughly $350. There is no way to know if the menu prices are accurate, so take this with a pinch of salt.

Samsung Galaxy Watch 4: Design

As mentioned earlier, the watch is expected to come in two variants – a Standard Edition and a Classic Edition. While the renders of both watches look similar at first glance, there will be some subtle differences between the two watches not only in terms of features or specs but even in terms of design. Both watches are expected to come with IP68 water resistance.

The standard Galaxy Watch of this generation is expected to have a 1.19-inch round dial with an OLED display just like all Samsung watches from the past few years. Samsung is expected to release the watch in multiple colors to attract a larger audience. They may also offer funky and colorful options apart from the usual black and white to appeal to a younger audience as well. The Galaxy Watch 4 may come with an aluminum body and a capacitive touch bezel that surrounds the display, just like the Galaxy Watch Active.

On the other hand, the Classic version is expected to be a slightly more premium smartwatch with a stainless steel case flanked by two buttons on the right edge, something that can be seen in the offerings of the standard variant as well. Unlike the capacitive touch bezel on the regular version, the Galaxy Watch 4 Classis is rumored to get a rotating bezel around the circular dial. This has been a standout feature of the Galaxy Watch series and quite reminiscent of some mechanical watches.

Specifications and Features

A recent report from SamMobile suggested that the new Galaxy Watch could feature the best hardware we’ve ever seen in a smartwatch. This can be attributed to the new Exynos W920 chipset that will supposedly be used in the Galaxy Watch 4. The new chipset can apparently achieve up to 1.25 times faster processing speeds and 8.8 times better graphics performance compared to the Exynos 9110 in the previous Galaxy Watches.

The Galaxy Watch series is said to have 16GB of internal storage and 1.5GB of RAM which is relatively higher than what is found in some other watches. The higher RAM will allow for smoother operation of the watch especially considering that Wear OS is a heavier platform compared to Tizen. The increased internal storage will allow users to install more apps and games on the watch due to the fact that the app library in the Play Store is much larger.

If we had to mention some of the new features expected, Max Weinbach, a famous guide has claimed that the Galaxy Watch Active 4 will come with a BIA sensor which is bio-impedance analysis. This will allow for body composition readings, something typically seen on body scales. Galaxy Watch 4 may allow users to track water content, fat levels, muscle mass etc. in their body which will be of great benefit to fitness enthusiasts.

There have been some rumors about blood glucose monitoring coming to the Galaxy Watch 4 series, but more recent reports say it might not happen this year. We’ll have to wait to see if it really makes its way and the Samsung one-ups Apple. Blood pressure monitoring, SpO2 monitoring, and ECG are features we may see on the Galaxy Watch 4.

Battery life is another thing to look for in the Galaxy Watch 4. Wear OS has traditionally been terrible with battery consumption while previous Galaxy watches were pretty good due to the fact that Tizen wasn’t power-hungry. It would be interesting to see what improvements Samsung made to Wear OS to make sure it doesn’t drain the watch by evening.

Software: OneUI Watch

The biggest highlight of the new Galaxy Watch will be the software the watch will be running on. As mentioned earlier, Samsung will use the WearOS architecture along with its own set of features that Tizen and Samsung in general have been known for. At MWC recently, Samsung announced that it will connect to this OneUI Watch platform to maintain the brand’s unification with the custom UI on Android.

OneUI Watch aims to provide a consistent user experience and look over other Galaxy devices. There are some features that Samsung has shown that make using the watch easier. Auto-install the app will install the Wear OS version of any app you install on your phone, provided it’s available. The settings menu on the OneUI Watch looks similar to what we see in OneUI on Samsung phones.

The biggest advantage of the Wear OS-based OneUI Watch is that users will now be able to access the Google Play Store to download their favorite apps and games. The range of apps on the Play Store and the number of developers making apps for Wear OS is much higher compared to Samsung’s own Tizen app store. Even in terms of customization and watch faces, users will now have a larger selection to choose from.

A recent leak from SamMobile shows the OneUI Watch user interface that is supposed to work on the Galaxy Watch 4 and Galaxy Watch 4 Classic.

With these clips, you can probably tell that the Galaxy Watch 4 Classic fits the look of a traditional mechanical watch with faded colors and icons. The watch faces also look more formal than the ones you can see on the regular Galaxy Watch 4.

That’s all we know about the Samsung Galaxy Watch 4 so far. We are less than two weeks away from launch and all speculation will turn into confirmed information on August 11th. Are you excited about the Galaxy Watch 4? This looks like the best Android smartwatch in a while through leaks and rumors, and it finally looks like the Apple Watch could have a worthy contender on the Android side of things.
