Pep Gardola has given his stamp of approval to Jack Grealish’s Manchester City debut, but said he will have to find his best “step by step”.
The £100m new boy joined training at the City Football Academy just yesterday before flying to London for the Community Shield match with Leicester.
He played the last half hour as the Blues lost 1-0 from a late penalty from Leicester, and hit the left of City’s attack, with Phil Foden injured and Raheem Sterling continuing to return to training after Guardiola gave England and Brazil – who reached the continental finals this… Summer – an extra week off.
Grealish replaced 18-year-old Sam Iduzi after the youngster developed a muscle spasm in the 64th minute, and struck a fine understanding with another teen, Cole Palmer, and then substitute Bernardo Silva.
There were a few glimpses of the brand’s sparkling feet as Grealish teased Ricardo Pereira – and Guardiola declared his delight at first sight at the British record-breaking City shirt purchase.

“He was really good – aggressive, he was up against two fullbacks and every time he had the ball there were three players. [around him]. We will know him and he will find the best step by step.”
Grealish is set to make his league debut for the club next Sunday at Tottenham, but whether he starts or comes off the bench again will depend on how training goes this week, with the rest of the squad expected to return.
“The players who played today will be better next Sunday,” Guardiola said. “That’s the process we have to do and these three games before the international break you get as many points as possible to be there and week after week we start the Champions League and I’m sure we’ll be better.

“But I saw a lot of amazing things today. I told all the players how proud I am but in this business we have to win and when you don’t, congratulate the opponent who totally deserves it and think about next week.”
Guardiola is clearly concerned that his players are not ready for the real start of the season next week, saying: “We will arrive like last season – late, late, late because UEFA and FIFA don’t give coaches time for calendars or players to rest, tomorrow seven arrives. Or eight players, Rodri has conducted two training sessions, Laporte is isolated, and many players only do two or three training sessions.
“We try to get results knowing we’re not at our best, game by game, starting at our best to compete in every match.”
