A priest is allegedly murdered by a man who helped his life get back on track after a cathedral in Nantes was burned.

The horrific accident is said to have taken place in Saint-Laurent-sur-Severs, a town in Vendée in western France.

Reports say Rwandan citizen Emmanuel Abaysanga, 40, arrived at a police station on Monday morning claiming to have killed Father Olivier Mer, 60.

He was said to have been arrested and the police went to the place where the Catholic priest’s body was found.

The alleged perpetrator is said to be the man accused of setting fire to Saint-Pierre-et-Saint-Paul cathedral in August last year.

A source in the investigation said, “The pastor is 60 years old and has welcomed the suspect into his community after his release from prison.”

He was recently put on probation and went to live in Saint-Laurent-sur-Severe.

“It is said that he carried out the killing on Monday morning before turning himself in to the police,” he added.

Abaisinga, a devout Catholic, was residing with the Montfortian community, which consisted of missionaries dedicated to St. Louis Marie Grignion de Montfort.

French Interior Minister Gerald Darmanin announced in a tweet that he would travel to the scene.

He wrote: “All my support for the Catholics in our country after the dramatic murder of a priest in Vendee. I go there.”

Fendi senator Bruno Ritayo paid tribute to the victim, also on social media.

He said, “I want to salute Father Olivier Mayer, the president of the Montfortians who was murdered by a criminal who dwelt outside alms.

“His death testifies to the kindness of this priest whom I know so well and whose faith I was able to appreciate.

“His death is a great loss.”
