Andrew Cuomo, the governor of New York state, resigned this week after the publication of a report alleging he sexually harassed 11 women. Cuomo denies any wrongdoing, but after a week of fighting, he announced he was stepping down on Tuesday.
The Guardian’s chief correspondent, Ed Pilkington, told Rachel Humphreys that the move marked the downfall of one of the most powerful figures in the Democratic Party. He was instrumental in passing liberal reforms on same-sex marriage, minimum wages, and strengthening laws on sexual harassment. But the release of the report documents another story: multiple allegations of harassment of women.
As deserted by former allies, including Joe Biden, Cuomo announced his departure but continued to deny all allegations. Now, as he contemplates his next step, he faces lawsuits, not just over allegations of sexual harassment, but over his handling of care homes in the Covid crisis.
