Russia publishes the worst epidemic death numbers so far
Russia’s Covid-19 daily set a new record of 819 on Saturday, a day after Moscow’s Health Ministry reported the city’s highest monthly death toll since the start of the pandemic.
Daily coronavirus deaths are increasing in Russia after infections peaked in July. The authorities blame the delta type of infection and the slow rate of vaccination.
Moscow said late Friday that the city’s death rate in July was 70 percent higher than it was before the pandemic in 2019 and 60 percent higher than the same month last year.
The death toll in Moscow totaled 17,237 in July, the highest monthly death toll since the pandemic began. The Moscow Health Ministry said most of the excess deaths were caused by the coronavirus outbreak.
Russia reported 22,144 new coronavirus infections on Saturday. Daily cases have fallen so far in August after the July peak.

“The country has entered another wave of the COVID-19 pandemic, and the FDA is particularly recognizing that immunocompromised people are at particular risk of developing serious illness,” Acting FDA Commissioner Janet Woodcock said in a statement.
The Food and Drug Administration said the additional dose was for solid organ transplant recipients or those with compromised immune systems.
