A man who comforted a Plymouth shooting victim in the last minutes of her life spoke of the moment the gunman came face-to-face.

Burt Pinkerton was seen on Dashcam car footage helping Kate Shepherd after she was shot at Henderson Place in the city on Thursday.

Speaking to Sky reporter Ashna Horning, Pinkerton said he saw her killer Jake Davison “with a blank expression” after the shooting, and he wishes he’d been able to handle the gunman.

He said, “(Davison) was basically staring at you. He was dressed in black—black shirt, big black beard, black curly hair, and walked as if on patrol, like a soldier with a gun.”

Pinkerton believes he could have been the next person to be shot if the 22-year-old was hit by more bullets.

He added, “He knew he had to have one for himself and that’s what he had left, because right after that, he shot himself.

“I’m not as fit as I used to be, but if it was back in the day, I would have jumped on him, even at his size.”

Pinkerton said he acted instinctively when he rushed to Mrs. Shepherd’s aid and used the corner of her jacket to apply pressure to one of her wounds.

He added, “I was talking to her the whole time – saying ‘help is on the way, help is on its way, you’re fine, I’m here with you’.”

She closed her eyes, trying to breathe.

Pinkerton kept Ms Shepherd conscious until paramedics arrived, but the 66-year-old died in hospital later.

Davison shot his 51-year-old mother, Maxine Davison, also known as Maxine Chapman, at a home on Bedeck Drive in the Keham area of Plymouth.

Then he took to the street and killed Sophie Martin, 3, and her father, Lee Martin, 43, in an attack witnessed by terrified onlookers.

Then Stephen Washington, 59, was killed in a nearby park, before shooting Ms. Shepherd.

Then Davison pointed the gun at himself.

Police watchdog will investigate Devon and Cornwall police over Davison’s possession of a rifle and shotgun.

The Independent Office of Police Conduct (IOPC) said it is looking into how he obtained the gun and licence, after they were removed by officers last December following assault allegations in September.

Special prayers are scheduled to be recited in Plymouth later in the day as the city mourns the five victims.

Plymouth gunman talks about ‘disappointments’

Churches across Devon, including St Thomas’ Chapel in Keham, are expected to use Sunday services to remember the victims, with a special prayer written by the Bishop of Exeter, Robert Atwell.

It comes as a former metropolitan police chief said officers should search the social media accounts of people applying for firearms licenses to ensure “the weapons do not fall into the hands of dangerous people”.

Former commissioner Lord Stevens told the Sunday Telegraph that Davison was “a distinctly dangerous man”, adding: “The videos he made should have been taken into account when he applied for a gun licence.

“There needs to be a search for online content to make an in-depth assessment of who these people are and what they think.”

Devon and Cornwall Police encourage people to submit information, and have created an online platform to do so at mipp.police.uk/operation/50DC21E73-PO1.
