Manchester United captain Harry Maguire has hailed the signing of Raphael Varane, although he was keen to offer encouragement to the man who would likely drop him from the squad.
Varane was officially revealed as a Manchester United player on Saturday when he was knocked out at Old Trafford ahead of Leeds’ 5-1 defeat. Visa issues and a quarantine period have delayed the official confirmation of the move, but the 28-year-old serial champion can now officially call himself the Red Devil.
Varane likely goes straight into the starting eleven to partner Maguire at the center of defence.
That would leave Victor Lindelof kicking his heels off the bench, and Maguire was quick to insist that the newly appointed Sweden captain still has a lot to offer at club level.
“To bring players to this club, also obviously of his caliber, would be really exciting,” Maguire initially said on Varane’s arrival (via the Daily Mail).
“Obviously everyone in the team is looking forward to working with him. I think the only thing he does is he enhances our defensive options.
“We have an incredible number of midfielders now at this club. All international players who have all proven in the Premier League. I have seen again how good Victor has been playing. [against Leeds].
Victor didn’t show just today [how good he is]But he showed up for the past two seasons while I was playing with him.
“He is an excellent footballer. So, as I say, to have that number of top midfielders is great to be competing for places. You get people to push more and push harder which is exciting.”

Maguire determines what Varane will bring
Varane won 18 major trophies during his time with Real Madrid, including four Champions League titles.
He was also a mainstay in the France squad that won the World Cup 2018. Maguire is thrilled that his side will now benefit from the winning mentality Varane will bring as Manchester United pursue major trophies now entering their fifth cupless season.
“I think you have seen what he has won during his career. He has played in some of the best teams. The French team and the Real Madrid team, he has won absolutely everything.”
“I think he will bring that winning mentality to the club and he will also bring his footballing ability to the club. Like I said, bringing players is great for the team. He lifts the team up. It’s great to be competing for the team – not just as a central defender but in any position.
“We thrive, that’s how we play. At one of the biggest clubs in the world, you don’t expect to have an easy ride and you don’t have competition for places.”
Varane himself sent a brief message to Manchester United fans after confirming his signature.
Via social media on Sunday, Varane thanked fans for his raucous reception at Old Trafford before promising to “work hard” for his new club.
