Haseeb Hamid opens, David Malan takes third place – my third test team

But when the crisis came on the fifth day, there weren’t enough people in the locker room who thought they could do it. Many were thinking about their positions. It is very difficult to build a strong and united cricket team when three or four think they might play their last Test match. It’s their fault because the management was very patient with a lot of players and they didn’t take their chances.

You know the testing team suffers when you hear people around the comment box saying that Haseeb Hamid looked really good. He scored a nine and went out twice because he fell into a four. He made a golden duck in the first innings. He’s a young player and I think he’s got something, but that worries me when we start talking about someone who has scored nine goals down and made a golden duck.

If we get down to that low we are struggling. We must be better than that.

I want more content and experience. I want to see David Malan at three. England cannot continue their opening Rory Burns-Dom Sibley partnership beyond 10 ducks this year. It’s the definition of insanity. It just doesn’t work. Altogether, 37 percent of their partnerships this year did not make it past the second.

It is amazing. You can’t go on with that and England knows that. I would give Hamid his rightful place to open Malan and throw it. England now needs a little substance. They have three games against India and then straight into the Ashes Series.

I don’t think they lose much if they put Malan in third. Zach Crowley may have found his rhythm by the time they got to Australia so he could be a number 3 reserve but Malan is playing well and has experience behind him. I’m not sure Ole Pop is #3, so he has to wait a little longer.

Let’s be honest, India is a better team. Against them, your tactics have to be spot on, you need several players to be in shape and you need a few little things to fit your way.

It would be difficult to recover without Stokes. They had one of the greats to pull out of a pit at Headingley’s last ash test. They were thrown for 67 but Stokes played the greatest roles of all time. Now there are signs that the chain could become very chaotic in England. They have to find some spirit and faith.

They have to hope that someone will turn up and do something like what Stokes did two years ago. Will probably be Joe again. But to what extent did this defeat drain his energy?
