The Duke and Duchess of Sussex have spoken of the pain caused by the tragic events in Afghanistan that left the Taliban in charge two decades after they were driven from power.

Prince Harry and Meghan released a statement through the Archewell Foundation website to reflect on the rapid change in the lives of the Afghan people – especially the women there – describing the world as “extremely fragile at the moment”.

The couple said it left them “speechless.”

The Sussex Islands were also reflected in the earthquake that struck Haiti, which has killed 1,500 people so far.

They said the growing humanitarian disaster there has left them “sad”.

Harry and Meghan also said the spread of new variants of Covid-19 and misinformation surrounding the coronavirus vaccine meant they were “left scared”.

They urged world leaders to act when they meet at the upcoming G-20 Leaders Summit and the United Nations General Assembly.

“As an international community, it is the decisions we make now – to alleviate suffering among those we know and those we may not meet – that will prove our humanity,” said the Duke and Duchess.

Harry and Meghan have said they want to do what they can “to face the moment” to provide support to the military community.

Harry has a number of links with veteran organizations and maintains a strong relationship with former soldiers, sailors and Air Force personnel who served in the British Armed Forces.

Harry was the co-pilot of an Apache helicopter on his second tour of Afghanistan.

“We can put our values into practice – together,” Harry and Meghan wrote, urging their supporters to direct their time and resources to different organizations.

One of them was World Central Kitchen, a charity that already has teams on the ground to feed those affected by the Haiti earthquake.

On the fight against the coronavirus, the couple mentioned the Vax Live campaign for equality in vaccines and the anti-poverty campaign group Global Citizen.

Harry and Meghan wrote: “We realize that many of you may be feeling helpless now as you watch the state of the world spin fast.

“It can feel overwhelming and defeated, but we believe in the power of common purpose, action, and a commitment to our collective well-being.”
