Two-Point Campus: Sega

Are you nostalgic for the lofty heights of Amusement World and the overgrown cartoon heads of Theme Hospital? Then it’s worth spending an hour or 20 with Sega’s Two Point Campus. The university management sim is more fun than this type of game would have you think, tasked with keeping your students happy and your school profitable. It’s colourful, quirky and full of personality. Bex April May PC, Nintendo Switch, Xbox and PlayStation

You may have thought about the fate of the humble skater at the height of the skateboarding craze of the Tony Hawk era. Meditation no longer: Rollerdrome proves to be a bit behind its time, only to come back even more radical than you could have ever imagined. Pro Skater meets club in this dystopian, results-based death sport. An instant, satisfying antidote to all the slow, painful edge-flickering I’ve done in other games this year. Nick Rubin PlayStation, PC

Shadows on hate

A spiritual sequel to 2017’s West of Loathing in Asymmetric, players guide a stick figure through a whitewashed, line drawing of a surreal Prohibition-era city. Despite the lack of effective graphics, we get stylish and often funny scattering on screen instead. The story is about a lost uncle, who is found by a series of hard damned things. Great and smart game machine. Sarah Maria Griffin PC

Gareth Damian Martin’s fantastic follow-up to Other Waters puts you as a “sleeper”: a robot with a human mind escaping a life of corporate servitude. Set on the Erlin’s Eye space station, it’s full of exciting stories, tense moments, and great writing, along with some amazing graphics from comic book artist Guillaume Singlelin. Lewis Packwood PC, Nintendo Switch, Xbox

I was a teenager out of colonialism

In this slice-of-life role-playing game, finding a new home in space doesn’t involve violent colonization. Instead, the game imagines a community full of likable characters wary of repeating the mistakes of ancient mankind, and you as a teenager just trying to grow up. The result is a soulful story about heartache, finding your place, and whether or not you should touch exotic plants and animals. Malindi Hetfield Computer, Playstation, Nintendo Switch

Remember when you felt like the days were long, you had no responsibilities, hallways were still a thing and your dad always told you what a complete letdown it was? Arcade Paradise is a management game about running a laundry with a secret video arcade in the back room, complete with playable cabinets that pay homage to all the greats of the era. Harnessing the gen X ennui and an honest appreciation for video game’s simpler origins, it’s a likable and sweetly disguised action sim. Keza McDonald PC, Playstation, Xbox, Nintendo Switch

Set in the fictional gothic-alt-city of Cumbria, Strange Horticulture casts you as the heir to the Lake District’s strangest florist. As you locate plants and sell them to your eccentric, and sometimes spiteful, clients, you’ll uncover a complex mystery of murder and cult. It’s a moody and creative detective game that’s perfect for breezy winter nights. Rick Lane PC, Nintendo Switch

Marsh Paradise

No game since 2013’s fantastic walking simulator Proteus has rendered pastoral beauty quite like Paradise Marsh. In a 3D pixel art wetland, you are tasked with catching insects and gazing at the stars. It will stir your heart and excite your senses – it’s hilarious, humorous, and transmitted almost transcendentally. Louis Gordon PC, Nintendo Switch, Xbox

Lost in Picture Play: Happy Juice Games

Using the power of their imaginations, the Lost in Play heroes, brother and sister, turn their garden into a grand story mission, as they set out to thwart the plans of a mischievous goblin. Great animation makes this puzzle-solving adventure feel like an interactive cartoon, and there are some cool and funny visual gags that make it as much fun to watch as to play. LP PC, Nintendo Switch

A rather ordinary family with fairly ordinary tensions, in this small town character study, is blown up when they stop at a hotel that has become the site of a tense siege between some petty criminals and the police. You occupy the minds of the antagonists and their victims, trace the paths that led each of these characters to this situation, and decide how they will act in its aftermath. Throwback to 1970s British popular horror films, Victorian archaeologist Thomasina Bateman attempts to excavate a Victorian Hope Barrow in a remote Yorkshire village, only to encounter unreliable locals, mysterious visions and signs of paganism. The voice acting is excellent and this point-and-click adventure deftly builds tension before ending with an unforgettable touch of drama. LP computer

Signalis survival horror is what you get when you combine the jump scares of ’90s Resident Evil with the existential despair of Russian filmmaker Andrei Tarkovsky. Ammo is conspicuously scarce, your inventory is willfully small and the many horrors lurking in an abandoned mining facility are on striking display. A skillful delight full of awe. LG Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, Xbox, PC

Don’t know how to run fast? That’s fine, Neon White will let you know. Running, shooting, and jumping are all great, but the real main hit here is the level design that slowly relieves the brakes. Runs that you thought were impossible 10 minutes ago are suddenly easy. Neon White will make you feel like a pro while still giddy as you smile in utter disbelief at your destructive momentum. NR PC and Nintendo Switch

Vampire survivors

Forget God of War Ragnarök, 2022’s purest power fantasy is Vampire Survivors, a pixel art shooter that has you killing tens of thousands of monsters in each level. Created by a former software developer in the gambling industry, it’s pure, dopamine-releasing silliness, the kind of game that quickly becomes a habit. LG PC, Xbox, Android

Silt’s grim underwater world is equally compelling and terrifying, and raises more questions than it answers. How can your diver possess other creatures? What is the significance of the strange statues you come across? And what is the purpose of the great machine that you feed with souls? Part David Lynch, part Playdead’s Limbo, it’s a game that will twist your subconscious mind and prey on your nerves. LP PC, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation and Xbox

flat eye

The management part of this gas station management card is simple enough to be mildly hypnotic. But where it gets really interesting is in its tests of future technologies in the gig economy, all of which are closer to becoming a reality than you might think. Here, sharing in the dystopia of capitalist technology is as essential as it is uncomfortable and eye-opening. MH Computer

A spooky and eerily accurate recreation of Tokyo is the setting for this paranormal action game in which sinister forces remove all but the ghosts from one of the most infamous cities in the world. Reality turns around you as you fight with spirits and converse with the dead. An underrated thriller. KM PlayStation 5, PC

Rodorden

Roadwarden packs the scale and consequence of The Witcher into a text-based game – one that instantly comes to life thanks to the lively writing. It does a great job of showing why table and video game players love fantasy settings, without giving away any of the medieval cruelty. MH Computer

You may have seen videos of Trombone Champ on social media when it went viral a few months ago — but did you play it? If not, you should. It’s a good musical game, as well as being intentionally hilarious, and its story adds a whole other layer of dark surrealism to touring with a virtual trombone. KM computer
