Nuno Espirito Santo opens up about Tanguy Ndombele’s situation and introduces Harry Kane . update

“My job here is not to convince the players to play for Tottenham Hotspur, but to prepare the players to play for Tottenham Hotspur,” Nuno Espirito Santo said of Tanguy Ndombele.

Football.London first revealed early this month that Ndombele was considering his options this summer and believes he has once again told the club he wants to leave.

The Frenchman also admitted to football.london last season that he told friends during his first few weeks after joining Tottenham from Lyon that he wanted to leave the club due to the challenging nature of Mauricio Pochettino’s pre-season training sessions.

Ndombele then informed the club of his desire to leave after his clash with Pochettino’s successor Jose Mourinho.

Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy held a meeting with the midfielder where he made it clear that the club were not willing to sell his record signing and that they believed he could be a star with them.

Ndombele gave up, improved and became a regular player under Mourinho but he no longer had the credit when the Portuguese was relieved of his duties and Ryan Mason took charge of the squad until the end of the season.

In the summer that the Frenchman became a father for the first time, it is believed that he once again indicated his intention to leave the club.

However, with the fee Spurs would demand for a player costing them around £60m, that would be a tough demand in a market beset by the financial pandemic.

Within Tottenham, Ndombele is seen as the most naturally talented player in the books and anyone who makes him play at a consistently high level could end up with one of the best midfielders in Europe.

However, the key is to get him in that position and Espirito Santo kept him out of the match day squads throughout pre-season and the France international was not scored in the two second leg matches of the Europa League.

The Tottenham boss said earlier that Ndombele was not at the “right moment” to play, then admitted on Friday that he would not be in his squad to face the Premier League match at Wolverhampton.

“What happened in the past I can’t even think about, I don’t remember it out of respect. What I can say is Tanguy is with us, it works but we have to speak honestly and take advantage of the best of me Tanguy must come from himself,” Espirito Santo said.

“It has to come from itself. I don’t want to go much further but it has to come from itself.”

The Portuguese was asked to expand on that a bit more and hinted that Ndombele would once again want to leave the club.

“First of all, I should speak to Tangwi before even addressing you. We have already had a chance to speak but it must come from himself,” he said.

“I’ve said it before – my job here is not to convince the players to play for Tottenham Hotspur, but to prepare the players to play for Tottenham Hotspur.”

Ndombele is not the only player looking to move away from Tottenham this summer as the Harry Kane saga continues.

The England captain was also not named in the match-day squad and Espirito Santo admitted that fitness isn’t just taken into account when making decisions.

“Everything, everything, not just with Harry but with all the players. We had problems with the match yesterday. The players are recovering,” he said.

“We have to measure all things with all the players, and Harry is another situation that we have to think about and decide.”

He added: “He trained well today. He’s better than yesterday. It’s a growing process. Every day he goes to the field improving his fitness. [Whether he will be involved on Sunday] It is a decision we will make tomorrow.”

When asked who gets to decide whether Kane will match him or Levi, he first answers “I” before changing her: “Sorry. Me and Harry.”

Espirito Santo believes there is a lot of work to do at Tottenham as he looks to get the club back on track.

“There are a lot of aspects that I think we need to work on. Of course the mentality, the focus and the focus on all the actions in the game. The basic principles of football, no matter what moment you are in the game. The mentality is one of the fundamental reasons for success.”

“I suspect [Sunday’s win against Manchester City] Is a good starting point. With a lot of things to improve.

“The way the players handled the game against City was good, but there are still things to improve. We didn’t start the game well, in the first 15 minutes City had two or three clear chances that could change everything that happened after that.

“The mentality is basic from the first minute to the last minute, but it was a good starting point for sure.”
