Extinction Rebellion: Police ‘take hours, not days’ to catch protesters

[ad_1]

Officers arrested 52 activists on Monday, but were unable to dismantle the table where nine activists were kept chained at night due to fears that it might collapse.

But officers have reportedly cordoned off the area to prevent photos from being taken as they continue to work to dismantle the large pink structure.

Portions of the four-meter-high building were seen carried by men in hard hats and blue overalls on Tuesday as activists gathered in the capital for the second day of a planned 12-day mass protest.

It came when the Welsh branch of XR threw a surprise party at St James’ Park as they bang drums and whistle on their march to Parliament Square.

They have opened a new front against the cops tying themselves together in Whitehall.

Demonstrators blocked roads in central London, including around Trafalgar Square on Monday, as they demanded the government immediately end investment in fossil fuels that lead to climate change.

Activists erected the large pink structure at the intersection of Long Acre and Upper St Martin’s Lane with the words “come to the table” written.

The table has built-in locks so protesters can attach themselves as well as the sleeping quarters and its stereo system.

One of the nine activists was caught in a video driving him away by police around 9am on Tuesday.

The Met confirmed by 10.15pm on Monday that 52 people had been arrested for a “variety” of crimes. She added that ten arrests were made on Sunday.

The Met Events team tweeted: “Overnight we continued cleaning the roads around the Extinction Rebellion protest at Long Acre Junction, #CoventGarden.

We removed the chairs that activists brought and plastered them on, and we made several arrests. At this time, the pink table structure remains.

The demonstrators closed their arms inside the table. Our specialist teams check this out.

We were told that if we stepped into the table, it could fall apart. We have to think about the safety of those out there and our officers.”

The force added that it is working with local companies to prevent any interruption in deliveries.

According to the XR website, this is the schedule for Tuesday’s Impossible Mutiny:

10 a.m. St James’ Park: “Not In Our Name,” XR Cymru movement.

Attendees were advised to meet near a café at Storey’s Gate.

11 a.m. London Bridge: “Make Pensions Environmentally Friendly – Stay Away from Oil and Gas,” XR Grandparents and Elders worked.

Attendees were advised to meet on Tooley Street.

4.30 p.m. Cavendish Square Gardens: “The red symbol of fossil fuel fashion.”

The Met had stopped 3,762 arrests during previous protests including in 2019, and brought in 1,938 trials, 73 percent of which ended in convictions. But a number of these were overturned after the Supreme Court ruled that obstruction could be a legitimate and legal form of protest.

The arrests came as XR co-founder Gail Bradbuck was called a “hypocrite” for admitting she drove her kids into rugby gear in a diesel car.

Dr. Bradbrook, a molecular biologist, admitted in a Talk Radio interview that she “did a lot of good things but also didn’t get it right” before revealing that she was driving.

When asked by host Christo Fovas if it was electric, the 49-year-old, who founded XR in 2018, said: “No, because I can’t afford it. But if someone wants to give me £5,000 you can convert my car to electric, not I have the money right now.”

The group has plans in London Bridge and Cavendish Square Gardens on Tuesday.
