Anti-vaccinators have made my life hell

Gareth Southgate has revealed that he was abused after joining a campaign to encourage people to get a coronavirus vaccine.

The England manager admitted that the attacks made him more inclined to “walk away from that argument for the time being” after he backed a government initiative, which was aimed specifically at young people who are jabed.

Vaccination of footballers has also become a huge problem for clubs – and Southgate said “reception is very diverse” – but added that it remains an “individual” option, despite players such as goalkeepers Dean Henderson and Karl Darlow testing positive and suffering from disease.

“I’m not going to get much involved in this because I’ve been asked to make a video supporting the vaccination programme, which I thought was responsible, and all the things I’ve been abused for over the summer, of which there have been many, perhaps the most abuse I’ve ever received,” Southgate said. “.

On abuse in general, he said, “I’ve kind of accepted that it’s part of the job, and of course when you want to try to make a difference, have the right attitude about taking the knee and other things, you know you’re not going to please everyone and there are extreme opinions on a lot of those topics as well.

“I’m comfortable with that, but I wouldn’t go into town about things like a vaccine in particular. I’m always happy to support the common good, and I think it’s true. I’m not the one who has to open some of that mail and some of those emails, because my poor secretary I dealt with a lot of it.”

Speaking while announcing his team, Southgate said social media has held the vaccination discussion.

“What news, what is fake news?” Asked. “So there are all kinds of campaigns. But I think there is a slight concern that one or two of the younger players – Dean Henderson and Carl Darlow – have actually had the virus. So it’s not necessarily necessary to say that as a young person you won’t have complicated symptoms. But I know participation is very different across clubs and this is for individuals. If they are over 18, they are entitled to make their own decisions.”
