Emma Raducano has yet to drop a set at this year’s US Open as she reached the third round with an impressive victory over veteran Zhang Shuai.

British teen Emma Radocano pursued her dream of the US Open with an impressive straight-set victory. This time over China’s Zhang Shuai to reach the third round in her first appearance.

The 18-year-old showed composure beyond her years to avenge Chinese No. 1, which she beat at the Silicon Valley Classic in August, with a stunning 6-2 6-4 victory.

Raducanu continued her impressive run to the last 16 at Wimbledon in July with another fantastic show at a major tournament.

The right-hander from Bromley was determined to give her veteran opponent an even better shot as she improved over the following weeks after going through three qualifying rounds and claiming her first major victory in New York against Stephanie Foggili.

“I’ve had five matches here in New York, so I feel very comfortable with the conditions and the pitches,” said Radocano.

“I’m getting used to it more and more and every round I feel like I’m going to make more shots, and today I think that was clear. I think I’ve come a long way since my first qualifying game here, but also since the first tournament of this trip five weeks ago.

“Playing at the Tour level for several weeks in a row definitely builds your confidence and I’ve been lucky enough to win a few matches.”

Raducanu qualifiers are one win away from her rival at Wimbledon in July

Raducanu got off to a whirlwind start on sunny pitch 10 after high winds Wednesday night and torrential rain from the remnants of Hurricane Ida.

He broke world number 150 in the first match and looked absolutely adept at serving to lead 3-1.

She continued to show the level that made her one of the most famous young players in the world with a fierce attack on Zhang’s serve. Her forehand wand did all sorts of damage and soon Raducanu closed the pack with another flawless service game.

The pressure continued into the second set as Raducanu dominated the longer rallies, baffling number 49 Zhang.

Zhang, 32, cut a frustrated figure and was simply junk-feeding by the time Radocano advanced 4-0.

Another big win for Emma Raducanu. She sure looks very comfortable in these courts. The next match will be really tough but I can’t wait to see how it ends 💪🎾

But her opponent finally halted the teen’s momentum with a three-game winning streak, though the teen responded with a superb fist to keep her away from winning one match.

Zhang contracted to put pressure on Raducano, but the Briton kept his cool and gathered himself to get the job done and set up a third-round meeting with another 2021 player of the year Sarah Soribes Tormo after the Spaniard beat Su Wei Hsieh 6-1 6-3.

“That match meant a lot to me on a personal level,” said Radocano. “I wanted to win this badly.

“I knew there was going to be an ordeal at some point in the match, and frankly, I was up 6-2, 4-0, but I had to work really hard for every point, and the matches were very long and challenging.

“The result was saying one thing, but I think the level of tennis we played together was telling a completely different story.

“It didn’t really bother me that she came back because I knew she was a great player, she had a lot of experience, and she was going to throw everything she had in my face. So I’m so proud of myself for getting over that and realizing it shuts me down in the end.”

Wimbledon champion Ashleigh Barty continued her relentless winning momentum

If Raducanu makes it to the fourth round, she will likely get a crack at World No. 1 Ashleigh Barty, who took on the challenge of another 18-year-old at Dane Clara Tauson.

Barty, not past the last 16 in New York, led 5-0 but Towson put up a tough fight in the second set, smashing the Wimbledon champion when she served in the match.

But Barty finished things off on the second try to win 6-1, 7-5.

The Australian is aiming for a second successive slam title after winning Wimbledon, and said: “There is momentum in the sense that it was one of my great goals to win that tournament.

“I think playing and understanding how to win the big trophies is very unique. Two weeks is a long time to focus and be able to have a little luck, and stay healthy.

“I’ve learned that the hard way sometimes things don’t always go your way. But also, it’s a different surface, different championships, completely different conditions.”
