Cristiano Ronaldo will wear the number 7 shirt for Manchester United again, 11 years after it was handed to him upon his move to Real Madrid.

Edinson Cavani was given the honor of the world famous United shirt number after his move from Paris Saint-Germain last summer.

Uruguayan Talisman wore the jersey in his impressive appearance against Wolverhampton on Sunday when the late winner Mason Greenwood helped Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side cross the line.

Meanwhile, Ronaldo completed his exciting move to Old Trafford, completing a £12.8m transfer from Juventus on the day of the transfer deadline.

A number of clubs, including Manchester City, were said to be vying to sign the 36-year-old, but he opted to return to his former club, shortening his time in Turin.

As a result, CR7 lives with Cavani handing the number he previously owned in an unprecedented move – no Premier League club has been allowed to switch numbers between players before.

Cavani will now wear the number 21 jersey, a number he has never worn at club level but has spent the vast majority of his international career wearing it since 2010, despite having worn the number 7 at the London Olympics in 2012.

With the departure of Dan James to Leeds United for a fee that rose to £30m, the shirt became available and allowed the five-time Ballon d’Or winner to take the number he had worn at his former clubs Real Madrid, Juventus and Manchester. United.

“I wasn’t sure if it would be possible to get the number seven shirt again,” Ronaldo said of regaining his trademark number. “So I would like to say a big thank you to Eddie for his kind gesture.”

And if this is consolation for Cavani, he scored 51 goals, wearing the number 21 for the Uruguayan national team.

“It’s a great number, which I have to wear with the national team as well. But I honestly think the number you’re wearing is more than just something off the field,” the 34-year-old previously handed the number 7, as Metro reported.

“When you have the opportunity to wear the number 7 shirt at Manchester United, which has been worn by some of the great players who have been legends here in this country and at this club, it’s a really good responsibility.”

Ronaldo will get his first chance to dress up in red for Manchester United and No. 7 against Newcastle on September 11th.
