Manchester United and Solskjaer say Cristiano Ronaldo’s decision was a mistake

Cristiano Ronaldo prefers to work from the left flank when he touches the ground to return to the Premier League – it was said.

Manchester United completed an exciting feat on deadline when the Portugal captain, now 36, re-signed with the club from Italy’s Juventus.

Ronaldo scored 118 goals and provided 69 assists during his first memorable stint at Old Trafford.

He also won three Premier League titles, the Champions League, and the first of five Ballon d’Or awards during those six seasons between 2003 and 2009, taking his dazzling career to even greater heights at Real Madrid, which was followed by three years at Serie A.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has already claimed that Ronaldo will be used primarily in a central position for United, now that he is back for a second season.

However, according to former West Ham champion Paulo Di Canio, this decision is not the right one and Ronaldo would not be pleased with the role.

Speaking to La Gazzetta dello Sport’s In The Box podcast, Di Canio said: “Ronaldo will improve the technical level, but he is joining a team with many strikers and wings.

Solskjaer said he considers him a central striker, but Ronaldo does not want to do that at Juventus.

“I still see him starting on the left, but United have other players in the same position, including Sancho, who earned €85m, but has been struggling to stabilize so far.”

Di Canio added: “Rashford will be back, Greenwood and Martial too. Solskjaer leaves his attackers up front, so this could be good for Ronaldo.

There is enthusiasm, but it remains to be seen if Ronaldo will be a stressful presence like Zlatan [Ibrahimovic] I was. Sometimes young players who don’t have a lot of character don’t understand that he wants the best from them.”
