What is happening in the Panjshir Valley?

Today we have heard reports that the Panjshir Valley – the last region in Afghanistan not under Taliban rule – has fallen into the hands of the armed forces.

However, the situation in the resistance stronghold remains unclear, with the National Resistance Front insisting these allegations are “false”.

The anti-Taliban fighters are led by former Vice President Amrullah Saleh and the son of resistance leader Ahmed Shah Massoud.

Their headquarters are in the Panjshir Valley, which has one narrow entrance located in the Hindu Kush mountains.

Local fighters succeeded in holding off the Soviets there in the 1980s and the Taliban a decade later under Mr. Massoud.

His son, Ahmed, issued a statement, Sunday, calling for an end to the fighting that erupted in the region in recent days.

He added that his forces are ready to lay down their weapons only if the Taliban agree to end their offensive.

Dozens of vehicles loaded with Taliban fighters were seen late on Sunday streaming into the Panjshir Valley.
