The former Marine shared a photo of his Nawzad colleagues smiling in neighboring Pakistan, describing the moment as “utterly mind-blowing” when they managed to get out of Taliban-controlled Kabul on Saturday.

He said, “This is absolutely amazing. You haven’t really sunk yet.”

Mr Farthing said he had seen photos of staff after they arrived and the smiles on their faces “tell you everything you need to know”.

Mr. Farthing tweeted that his “Operation Ark” campaign to get workers and animals out of the Nawzad shelter in Kabul was a “complete success”.

Afghan staff raised dozens of rescued animals by hand but were unable to leave during a rapid mass evacuation as foreign forces withdrew from the country nearly two decades after US forces ousted the militants from power in 2001.

Foreign Secretary Dominic Raab wrote on Twitter: “We are delighted that Afghan Nawzad staff, who have been called for evacuation, have successfully crossed the border into Pakistan today. We have @ukinpakistanstaff helping them and look forward to welcoming them to the UK in the coming days.”

Since arriving in England at the end of August, Mr Farthing has been working to help evacuate 68 Nowzad animal shelter staff and family members, including 25 babies and a newborn, from Afghanistan.

The “Operation Astronomy” campaign generated controversy, despite it garnering an enormous amount of popular support.

Defense Secretary Ben Wallace complained that some of Farthing’s more hawkish supporters had “taken too much time” from senior commanders.
