US, UK and Australia announce defense pact

Britain, America and Australia announced a “historic” defense pact to strengthen their defenses and share the secrets of nuclear submarines.

The initiative, which focuses on helping the Australian Navy, comes amid growing concerns about China.

Australia’s ABC News said it will use US and British technology to replace the existing Collins-class submarines with a type more suited to the deteriorating strategic environment.

She said the new three-nation security agreement will be known as AUKUS and is likely to be viewed by China as an attempt to counter its regional influence, particularly in the disputed South China Sea.

In the states, Biden reportedly plans to announce a plan on Wednesday to share advanced technologies in a working group with Britain and Australia as part of moves to counter China.

It quoted one of the sources as saying that as part of the agreement, the US and Britain will share their knowledge of how to maintain nuclear defense infrastructure.

Australia in 2016 chose French shipbuilder Naval Group to build a new $40 billion submarine fleet to replace the more than two-decade-old Collins submarines.

It was one of the world’s most lucrative defense deals, but it has run into problems and delays due to Canberra’s requirement that the majority of manufacturing and components be sourced locally.

“At 2200 GMT tonight, the Prime Minister will address the camera, along with US President Biden and Australian Prime Minister Morrison, on a National Security Strategy,” a Downing Street spokeswoman said.
