Students returned to school in the south after the 7.2 magnitude earthquake that struck Haiti in August.

Schools have returned to sessions for the 300,000 students living in the three departments devastated by the 7.2-magnitude earthquake that struck Haiti in August.

In its back-to-school campaign that kicked off Oct. 4, the Ministry of National Education and Vocational Training has urged all schools in a position to welcome students in the departments of Niepce, Grande Anse and Les Cayes. The campaign’s relaunch, held at the École Saint-Anne des Cayes, attracted Marie-Lucy Joseph, Minister of National Education, Bruno Maes, UNICEF Representative in Haiti, several local and national government authorities, and teachers.

At the Saint-Anne des Cayes event, officials reiterated the need to ensure students continue their studies, even if their abilities are limited. To provide this educational opportunity, some pupils will be scheduled for the morning sessions and some for the afternoon classes this school year.

Officials chose Saint-Anne, a primary and secondary school, for the event because it also accommodates students of the Ecole Nationale in Derrière-Fort, a nearby municipality hard hit by the earthquake.

Students in the other seven departments of Haiti, including those in Port-au-Prince, returned to school on September 21. read more
