Cop26 updates in Glasgow: Boris Johnson admits there is ‘no chance’ to limit temperature rise to 1.5°C

Watch live as climate protesters gather in Manhattan before Cop26

Prime Minister Boris Johnson said there was “no chance” of a deal to prevent runaway climate change at COP26, given countries’ existing carbon-cutting pledges.

Speaking at the G20 summit in Rome, he said: “Where we stand today, there is no chance for us to stop climate change next week.

There is no chance of getting an agreement next week to limit climate change to 1.5 degrees.

“What we can do if everyone works together, what we can do, is get an agreement that means Cop26 in Glasgow is a way station that allows us to end climate change,” he added.

The prime minister’s bleak comments follow a failed attempt to persuade Chinese Prime Minister Xi Jinping to reach peak carbon dioxide emissions ahead of schedule – in 2025 – rather than 2030, as is the case in China’s current plan. Since China is the world’s largest emitter of carbon dioxide, and Mr. Jinping will not attend the climate summit, a deal that prevents global temperature from rising more than 1.5°C is unlikely because industrialization levels would be possible.

The Climate Summit is set to begin on Sunday in Glasgow, where 196 world leaders and nearly 20,000 delegates will gather to commit to reducing carbon emissions in the hope of averting climate catastrophe.

The ‘Climate Train’ takes delegates, young activists and MEPs from the Netherlands to Glasgow for COP26.

The idea for the train was developed through a partnership between Avanti West Coast, Eurostar, NS, ProRail and Youth for Sustainable Travel.

The train travels between Amsterdam, Rotterdam, Brussels and London, before reaching its final destination in Glasgow.

Organizers insist the train is a more environmentally friendly way to get to the top of the climate, as the carbon footprint of one passenger from a trip from Amsterdam to London is equal to seven Eurostar train journeys.

Rail operators across Europe pledged to remain the most sustainable form of automated transportation before Cop26.

The British government’s chief adviser warned that 1635602910UK failed in the poorest countries on climate

The government’s chief climate adviser has warned that Britain is failing to help the world’s poorest countries tackle the climate crisis.

Lord Dippen, chair of the Climate Change Committee, told The Independent that the UK had “caused more climate change than anyone else” because of Britain’s historic role in the Industrial Revolution, but had not done enough to support the countries that are now hardest hit. Because of extreme weather and rising global temperatures.

“Britain has caused more climate change than anyone else,” he said.

“We invented the Industrial Revolution, it’s part of our history. We’ve caused climate change and we have to pay for it.”

“The fact that we haven’t yet raised the money we promised to help developing countries get from where they should be to where they should be is a huge disadvantage.”

1635601618 ‘No chance’ of deal to limit temperature rise to 1.5°C at summit, admits Boris Johnson

Speaking at the G20 summit in Rome, Boris Johnson said there was “no chance” of a deal to prevent runaway climate change at COP26, given current carbon pledges.

“What we stand on today, there is no chance of stopping climate change next week,” Johnson said.

There is no chance of getting an agreement next week to limit climate change to 1.5 degrees.

“What we could conceivably do if everyone worked together, what we can do, is get an agreement that means Cop26 in Glasgow is a way station that allows us to end climate change.”

Johnson’s comments come after he failed to persuade Chinese Prime Minister Xi Jinping to reach peak carbon dioxide emissions by 2025, rather than China’s current 2030 plan.

Sheffield has been named the UK’s most sustainable city – while Wolverhampton is at the bottom of the list

Sheffield has been called the greenest city in the UK.

Although George Orwell called it “the ugliest city in the world” due to its excessive smoke, researchers from the University of Southampton ranked South Yorkshire as the most sustainable city in the country.

The vast open spaces, millions of trees, and the relatively high volume of renewable energy production helped the Steel City secure the lead.

Edinburgh came second and Cardiff third. Glasgow, which is set to host Cop26, was ranked seventh, while London ranked 11th. Wolverhampton ranked 25th.

1635599338UK Australia wants to be more committed to tackling climate change

The UK is increasing pressure on a number of countries ahead of Cop26 and wants Australia to step up in tackling climate change, a spokesman for Boris Johnson said.

The spokesperson said that although Australia had made a number of commitments around reaching net zero carbon emissions, Britain believed the oceanic country could do more with regard to coal.

“We believe Australia can do more in areas such as coal and we will continue to have those discussions,” the spokesman told reporters.

1635598198 Boris Johnson warns of new “dark ages” if temperatures continue to rise unchecked

Speaking from the Colosseum in Rome, Boris Johnson warned that the world could be headed into new “dark ages” if global temperatures continue to rise unchecked.

“If you increase the planet’s temperatures by four degrees or more as ruthlessly predicted, you’ll see the graphs, then you’re producing these very difficult geopolitical events,” he told News Channel.

“You produce shortages, you produce desertification, loss of habitat, movements … competitions over water, food, huge movements of people.

These are things that will be very difficult to control politically.

When the Roman Empire fell, it was largely the result of uncontrolled immigration. The empire could no longer control its borders, people came from the east, and we went into the dark ages.

The point is to say it could happen again. People should not be so conceited that history is a one-way rat.

The prime minister added that he still rates the chances of success at Cop26 in Glasgow at no more than six out of ten, confirming a statement he made last month.

1635595918 ‘We can’t drink oil’ says Vanessa Nackett: Leaders must commit to ending new fossil fuel projects at Cop26

On the eve of the United Nations climate summit, Ugandan ecologist Vanessa Nakate told The Independent that world leaders must commit to ending all new fossil fuel projects.

“My message to leaders is that their words must match their actions.

“If leaders are going to talk about getting to net zero, they have to start now. They must put an end to investment in new fossil fuel projects.

“The thing I always say is we can’t eat coal, we can’t drink oil, we can’t breathe the so-called natural gas.”

Theatrical performance of Ocean Rebellion members in Glasgow before Cop26

Members of the Ocean Rebellion staged a “dead merpeople” rally in Glasgow, protesting global policies toward the world’s oceans, and calling for oceans to be included in climate talks, ahead of the UN’s Cop26 climate summit.

Ocean Rebellion’s Andrew Daunton told Sky News: “Nobody talks about oceans, oceans are silent, they’re not included in climate talks, they’re not budgeted, shipping gets a free hit, and they can emit whatever they like.”

And so we draw attention to the fact that talking about the climate must include the oceans. The oceans absorb more carbon than trees, and when you fish them from below you release more carbon than the entirety of aviation, but it’s not in the calculations or in the conversations.”
