According to the National Center for Seismology (NCS), the earthquake was at a depth of 20 km. “Gadchiroli is in the third seismic zone and an earthquake of such magnitude is not unusual or unexpected,” former NCS chief AK Shukla told IANS. “The earthquake site is located near the Godavari Valley Fault System,” he added, adding that the third region could produce a magnitude 5 earthquake.
