Arteta talks about Nkye’s contract negotiations with Arsenal

Time is running out for Arsenal to secure the future of Hill End graduate Eddie Nketiah.

The striker has been with the club since the age of 16, but with talks about a new deal at an impasse, it increasingly looks like this will be his last season with Arsenal.

Mikel Arteta often spoke in glowing terms about the young striker, indicating that he expects him to have a massive future in the game.

Just last week, the Arsenal boss suggested he wants to keep Benketia, 22, who will become a free agent at the end of the current campaign.

“We had a situation in the summer and there are still problems to be resolved,” Arteta said after Nketia’s League Cup goal. “But I believe Eddie will be a great player – hopefully for Arsenal.”

“I’m happy to have him in the team, I rate him really high, and for my part, I want him to stay.”

However, actions speak louder than words when it comes to Arteta’s genuine desire to involve Nketia in his growing Emirati revolution.

In 10 Premier League matches this season, he has not yet participated, despite the matches in which Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Alexandre Lacazette missed.

In the season opener, Arteta chose to start his young teammate Folarin Balogun, perhaps due to his more secure future.

This left a point position in the club precarious to say the least. During the summer window, there was widespread speculation linking him with an exit, with Arsenal reportedly asking £20m for his services.

If they fail to reach an agreement on a new deal between now and next May, it will be £20m towards rebuilding that would have slipped.

That means a January exit could become palatable and with former boss Unai Emery on the verge of returning to the Premier League, the perfect escape route may have emerged.

When Nkeia was loaned to Leeds in 2019, he confirmed that Emery really wanted him to stay at Arsenal and considered it an important part of his own plans.

The former Arsenal boss is said to be close to being appointed as the new Newcastle United boss as Saudi Arabia prepares the club to display their considerable financial strength for the first time since taking the job.

It is said that the Magpies are confident of securing a deal across the line for the Villarreal manager and will support him appropriately in their quest to avoid a downfall.

With Newcastle remaining in the bottom three, their January list of requirements will be plentiful. But it is likely that a new attacker will be at the top of that list.

Another body is needed to help Callum Wilson and Nketiah set the law perfectly.

After Joe Willock sold the Tyneside giants in the summer, Emery’s arrival in Newcastle could provide Arsenal with another cash injection in time.
