JAKARTA, Indonesia – A shallow undersea earthquake rocked part of eastern Indonesia on Thursday, but there were no immediate reports of major damage or injuries.

The US Geological Survey said the 5.7-magnitude quake struck 65 km off the coastal village of Amahai on the island of Seram in North Maluku province. She added that the epicenter of the earthquake was at a depth of ten kilometers below sea level.

Indonesia’s Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency said the quake was unlikely to trigger a tsunami.

North Maluku, with a population of about one million, is one of the least populous provinces in Indonesia.

Indonesia, a vast archipelago of 270 million people, is frequently hit by earthquakes, volcanic eruptions and tsunamis due to its location on the “Ring of Fire,” an arc of volcanoes and fault lines that arch the Pacific Ocean.

The last major earthquake occurred in January when a 6.2-magnitude earthquake killed at least 105 people and injured nearly 6,500 in West Sulawesi province.
