England
15 Freddy Steward is effortlessly agile in the air – he never seems to drop one – and he took the first of what should be a lot of good attempts. 8/10
14 Manu Tuilagi rarely stayed on the wing, coming in and attacking the defense. Maybe it’s better to play him in his best position. 6
13- Henry Slade spent a lot of time as a linebacker or winger and while he showed his quality, he looked like a square in a circular hole at times. 6
12 Owen Farrell (Captain) A solid comeback to the side, but if he goes out limping, it’s a safe bet he’s going to get hurt. A concern, with South Africa here next week. 6
11- Johnny May did not take advantage of a promising opportunity in the first half and lost after that. 5
10 Marcus Smith Isn’t Bad. He kicked a lot early on but showed his ability when he put Steward away. Little things forced. 7
9- Ben Youngs kicks well and dispenses the money, including a darker long pass as he falls backwards. 7
1 Bevan Rudd Needles kick an early penalty against but responded with a powerful kick in the 22nd for Australia. He brought some weight to the goalkeeper, also in an impressive first appearance. 8
2 Jimmy George Hegan ran in the middle, just when England was calm. But he dropped one of them over the line and was wounded in the process. 6
3 Kyle Sinckler Lots of grunt but his subtle touch of the ball in his hand sets him apart and his effect grows as the match goes on. 8
4 Maru Itogi was not the most disciplined in his performance, but he boosted his level of play when Australia threatened to return. 6
5 Johnny Hill Strong holds up at the start of the second half but holds out at the end. Slowly but surely growing in stature at this level. 7
6 Laws Courtney As usual, beautiful feet to buy himself an extra yard. The most consistent striker in England at the moment. 7
7 Sam Underhill It wasn’t one of his most visible matches but it might have been tough to make an impact when the meltdown was such a mess. 6
8 Tom Curry There was a lot of work to do, although not fully convincing at No. 8 and Dombrandt’s cameo showed what a Specialist can do when given the chance. 7
Australia
15 Kurtley Beale Beaten easily bit Steward’s attempt and endured a frustrating afternoon, finding himself at the end of several loose passes. 5
14 Andrew Killaway The former Northampton winger had a huge impact on the rugby tournament but was unable to achieve that level in the North. 5
13 Len Ikitau has an embossed “effort” on his wrist and there was no shortage of it. England almost took a nap but Smith was vigilant. 6
12 Hunter Baisame leveled Smith in the first inning to force the blow, and he broke in the second. 7
11 – Tom Wright could have no complaints about the yellow card – which felt the right penalty – and the ball fumbled when it was well positioned to rush to the left. 4
10. James O’Connor’s goal kick was at the expense of the money from the start and, having sat so deep against Scotland, struck a better balance in his game. 6
9 Nic White is busy and hardworking throughout and has come up with a great tackle to deny George a try. 7
1 Angus Bell Mindless tip on Lawes was shown a yellow card when Australia were one point behind. 4
2 Folau Fainga’a swings one or two at line-up time and misses a few paces before being substituted. 5
3 James Slipper dedicated one penalty to Rudd but he responded well and kept toiling against the coals. 6
4 Rory Arnold brings a little muscle to the Wallabies pack and makes some significant meters in heavy traffic. 6
5 – The ridiculous Isaac Roda broke a penalty against but was suspended in the line-up and a public thorn in the English side. 7
6 Rob Leota made a choice of streaks and he turned out well as a carry option but his discipline was an issue. 6
7 Michael Hooper (Captain) Effort and energy in abundance, as we expected. He was the man of the match when he came off limping after 55 minutes. 7
8 Rob Valletini did a brutal tackle on Youngs when England were threatening and caused some scrapes. 6
