Charles met nine-year-old Elias from Iraq, asked about his school lessons and heard he was getting very good grades. “My Arabic is not as good as your English,” he said with a smile.
The prince also met refugee families who receive UK assistance through the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees. Unable to work in Jordan, they receive basic financial assistance and support to help them rebuild their lives.
He was touched when Fayhaa, 38, handed him a pencil drawing of himself, who had fled Damascus with her husband and three children after a bomb exploded near them. She now runs an art workshop in Amman. “Wow,” he said before taking a picture with her.
A handwritten note was placed on the back of the photo asking the prince for help and telling him: “We are not asking for asylum – we want an opportunity to work and be active in the community.”
The Duchess spoke about the importance of ‘connecting to attract other women’ as she made two solo visits focused on women’s empowerment in Jordan.
Addressing guests at an event for Women of the World (WoW), which she chairs, she said: “I heard some wise words from Queen Rania. Her Majesty the Queen once said: ‘When a woman succeeds, she reaches out to those around her and pulls them to her.'”
“That’s why, when you empower women, you empower an entire community.” The collective experience of the women in this room proves these words true.” She added that there had been “serious communication and withdrawal across our two countries.”
Earlier in the day, Camilla visited Princess Taghreed Girls School, where she was greeted by Girl Scouts at the entrance and presented with a bouquet of flowers from eight-year-old Salma.
The school’s older students were also given a chance to meet the Duchess and share some of their career aspirations for the future. When Dina, 16, said she wanted to be a pilot when she was older, Camilla replied, “Maybe one day I can get on a plane and she’ll be on top of it.”
