Climate protesters block London bridges after activists jailed | Isolate Britain

Climate protesters have closed two bridges in London as part of a demonstration against the imprisonment of nine Britain’s Insulate activists.

Members of the group were sentenced this week after they breached a court order to stop more roadblocks that have caused serious disruption to motorists since September.

Activists halted traffic on the Lambeth Bridge, which crosses the Thames between Westminster and Lambeth, after 2:30 p.m. on Saturday. The sit-in forced the police to divert traffic to other roads.

Four people glued themselves together. The Meteorological Organization imposed public order conditions on the protest and ordered the activists to leave on Saturday evening. A sudden protest also led to the damming of Vauxhall Bridge, the next bridge upstream.

Gabriella Deaton, 27, who was taking part in the demonstration at Lambeth Bridge, said she believed she would end up in prison for participating in the protests. She was caught six times with the expedition group, once for breaching an order.

“I have known for a few years that the only thing that will serve us is civil resistance. I have confidence in people meeting.

“Solutions to this crisis exist, we just need the political will to do so.”

Zoe Cohen, 51, who traveled from Warrington in northwest England to take part, said: “I am angry, stunned and saddened by the vast amount of nature we have already lost.”

“Ordinary people should not do this and risk imprisonment,” she added.

“What a microscopic disruption to the suffering of the millions of people who are now dying around the world because of this crisis.”

More than 200 supporters of the jailed activists gathered in front of the Royal Courts of Justice on Saturday. Insulate Britain said it was not involved in organizing the event.

“Make no mistake, these are political prisoners and they won’t be the last,” one activist, Jolie, told the crowd.

The group then marched from the courts to Westminster, chanting “Power to the people”.

Insulate Britain began a wave of protests in September and closed the M25 and other routes in London, Birmingham and Manchester, and near the port of Dover in Kent.

The nine protesters were sentenced in the Supreme Court on Wednesday after admitting to breaching an injunction by participating in a blockade of the M25 during the morning rush hour on October 8.
