Jadon Sancho and Marcus Rashford started, Cristiano Ronaldo stays, but there’s still room for Donny van de Beek – Mauricio Pochettino’s Manchester United squad?

Manchester United took its time after a series of shameful defeats, but Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was finally removed from the position of team manager, and the search for a replacement has officially begun.

Vicarage’s humbling 4-1 road from Watford led by Claudio Ranieri saw the curtain fall on Solskjaer’s time at United, ending his nearly three-year tenure with no luck.

Solskjaer has come to the end of the road, with Michael Carrick taking charge on a temporary basis, and could stay there until the summer if Ferguson has his say.

Fergie desperately needs Pochettino at Old Trafford’s bunker according to TalkSPORT sources

The Manchester giants lost to one of their top unemployed coaches when Spurs beat Antonio Conte at the start of November, but they may end up waiting for a man connected to Spurs.

TalkSPORT sources understand that Sir Alex Ferguson is pressing for Mauricio Pochettino to take charge, and the club may be happy to wait until next summer for the current PSG boss.

The Argentine is also believed to be “desperate” to take the job at Old Trafford, as the fact that his family is still based in London is a big factor in his desire to return to the Premier League.

Pochettino spent nearly seven years in the Premier League between 2013 and 2019, first at Southampton, before turning Spurs into cup contenders both domestically and in Europe.

Poch has not had the best start to life again in France, and may be tempted to return to England

Pochettino has made some huge heights at Tottenham, and he could go even further with a huge financial backing at United

The 49-year-old has been regularly linked with United over the years with Fergie’s adoration fame, but with the club sticking with Solskjaer so far, the Argentine has opted to join Paris Saint-Germain, of which he has starred.

But things did not go well so far in Paris, as Pochettino lost the Ligue 1 title to Lille last season, before being knocked out of the Champions League after a weak semi-final defeat against Manchester City.

His poor start in France has him linked with a Tottenham comeback, but things have improved this season thanks to a busy summer that has seen the arrivals of Lionel Messi, Sergio Ramos and Gianluigi Donnarumma among others.

Paris Saint-Germain leads the Ligue 1 by 12 points, but that has not stopped Ferguson from trying to bring him back to England.

Unlike Solskjaer 2021/22 United, Pochettino’s teams are known for strength and speed, and that’s what they could look like if they ended up in Old Trafford.

Sancho looked world class in Germany but didn’t score a goal or assist for United, so can Bosch reawaken the £73m man? What would Manchester United look like under Pochettino?

As a coach famous for turning youngsters into stars, United’s squad is likely to see United give Marcus Rashford and Jadon Sancho the opportunity to impress, entering to support Cristiano Ronaldo in a 4-2-3-1.

Going back to Pochettino’s time with Tottenham, Rashford has been operating in a similar fashion to Dele Alli, working hard on the left but standing by Ronaldo when possible.

Sancho will then drift alongside Fernandes to help create chances for the duo.

Paul Pogba could find himself in a role similar to that of Moussa Dembele, who directed opponents towards him and broke lines, allowing Spurs to create opportunities to counterattack.

It’s slim picks in defense with a quadruped in the back that pretty much sorts itself out, but there’s going to be extra thrust for those up front to help carry the load.

There is no doubt that Luke Shaw could operate under former boss Pochettino, but it remains to be seen whether Aaron Wan-Bissaka will thrive given his offensive flaws.

Rashford and Sancho, it’s time to step up and set the standard
