An earthquake near Poway was mistakenly reported: USGS

POWEI, CA – An earthquake that was mistakenly reported reached San Diego County on Wednesday, authorities said.

A 4.9-magnitude earthquake was reported two miles from Mira Mesa, 10.1 miles from Powai and 8.1 miles from Solana Beach at about 4:30 a.m., according to a representative from the National Earthquake Information Center.

An earthquake hit at the time, but in Baja California, Mexico, it measured 4.6.

After being reviewed by a seismologist, the quake was quickly removed from the US Geological Survey’s list of events at about 8 a.m., about 15 minutes after the initial public notice. The USGS Earthquake Notification System provides public updates using the Advanced National Seismic System.

“It’s an automated system, and when the data comes in, seismologists take a look at it and see if it’s real,” said Susan Garcia of the USGS Seismology Center.

The USGS website cites multiple instances of misreporting, as automated systems are “prone to errors”. However, these events are removed or omitted by the seismologist after revision.
