Goals by Bukayo Saka and Gabriel Martinelli helped Arsenal get back on the winning path as Newcastle United remained winless in the Premier League.

After the Liverpool attack, Mikel Arteta demanded a response, and Arsenal stars did well to finish the Newcastle United match in the Emirates. Bukayo Saka and substitute Gabriel Martinelli’s goals in the second half were enough to secure three points, as Arsenal tied with fourth-placed West Ham United.

Arsenal gave up on their fast paced style of the match and looked content to grab the ball and run steady. While they had plenty of attempts, only a handful were on target. Next, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang missed a divorced babysitter to double his last sloppy form as both teams went into the second half goalless.

Arsenal came out strongly in the second half and put the Newcastle defense under enormous pressure. Their efforts quickly paid off as Saka, who turned on the left side, along with Emile Smith Rowe and Nuno Tavares, got the ball back to score past Martin Dubravka.

Newcastle made a few attempts on goal, although it was no problem for Aaron Ramsdale. As the match continued, Callum Wilson found himself in a one-on-one situation with the Arsenal goalkeeper before Tavares pushed the ball off his feet, and the incident was questioned as Magpies demanded a penalty, but no one was charged.

Arsenal then advanced from the right as Takehiro Tomiyasu lifted the ball towards substitute Martinelli, who separated from his marker. The Brazilian’s shot for the first time, an accurate shot behind Martin Dubravka to put the Gunners in a comfortable position. Arsenal player ratings Aaron Ramsdale – 8/10

Except for a superb save to take the ball to the crossbar, Ramsdale was barely bothered by Magpies’ attack. He kept things calm in the penalty area as he proves that he is dominant in the area.

Takehiro Tomiyasu – 8/10

Tomiyasu was more advanced against Newcastle and eliminated the threat posed by Allan Saint-Maximin with the help of Ben White. He had an assist for Martinelli’s second goal, while defensively, the Magpies strikers were unable to get past him throughout the afternoon.

Ben White – 7.5/10

Ben White was having a good afternoon in the back. Show calm in the face of the physical pressure exerted by Wilson, with his partner Gabriel doing all the dirty work. He kept the Newcastle attackers at arm’s length and was always in the penalty area when needed.

Gabriel – 7.5 / 10

Gabriel was tasked with managing the threat posed by Wilson, and he did the job admirably. The Newcastle striker couldn’t get anything out of him physically or tactically, with the Brazilian instead expertly protecting his target.

Nuno Tavares – 8/10

Arsenal fans were frustrated with the Portuguese over his useless first-half shot. Tavares came out as a different player after the break and proved crucial in setting up Saka’s goal. He also did the hard work defensively because the Magpies’ attackers couldn’t beat him with speed. He showed tremendous energy even in the last moments of the game.

Thomas Partey – 6.5/10

Barty isn’t looking at 100% yet, though a good turnaround has been made for most parts of the game. While the Newcastle midfielders were unable to control their midfield, the Ghanaian made very little contribution in attacking the ball. He’s taken off to keep him for next week’s Old Trafford meet.

Sambi Lokonga – 8.5 / 10

Albert Sambi Lukonga (6) created more chances than the entire Newcastle team combined (5) this afternoon.

What Barty lacked in attacking the ball, Lokonga duly made up for it, putting in a great display. Arteta was expected to drop him from the match altogether, only to be kept and put in his best performance of the match. Great on the ball and always pushing it forward. He has made a huge contribution to everything Arsenal did right.

Bukayo Saka – 8.5/10

While Arsenal were looking for an opening goal, Bukayo Saka put on superb football in a 10-minute period after the start of the second half turned the game. He took his aim well and changed the mood in the Emirates, which had been a bit boring until that point. He came off injury, which should be a concern for Arsenal thinking about their next match.

Martin Odegaard – 6.5/10

After a busy day the Norwegian saw a lot of ball. Odegaard had a good run on the ball and often found options across the offensive third. He could have scored had he targeted the top corner with a direct free kick, which Dubravka saved well.

Emile Smith Rowe – 7/10

Smith Roe found it difficult to find space to make his presence felt. However, he did make a few shots as well as a close-range header which Dubravka saved. He played a major role in Saka’s goal and teamed up well with him and Tavares.

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang – 5/10

Aubameyang couldn’t miss such sitters. He only had a fantastic 3-4 yard chance to put Arsenal ahead, which he missed. He looked increasingly out of touch from the match except for a few moments when he was on the line.

Subs: Gabriel Martinelli – 7/10

The Brazilian proved to be an inspiring replacement for Arteta. Just 93 seconds into his demise, Martinelli hit Tomiasso’s ball with precision past Dubravka to double Arsenal’s lead. After this goal, he showed confidence and attacked the last third with a direct absence in the Arsenal team.

Alexandre Lacazette – 5/10

Despite having only a few minutes on the field, Lacazette had no effect as he looked like a player who had played the full 90 minutes rather than someone who had just participated. He also missed the opportunity to make it Martinelli.

Mohamed Elneny – N / A

Arteta sent him to watch the match and give Thomas Partey some rest.

Ratings for Newcastle United player Martin Dubravka – 6/10

Despite conceding twice in the second half, Dubravka was a reliable presence in the area. He had good control of the actions, and did some decent balls, especially from Smith Rowe and Odegaard in the first half. He is still much better than the other two Newcastle goalkeepers.

Emile Kraft – 6/10

After a decent first half, when the team defended with numbers, their individual qualities were tested at the next stage. Kraft was somewhat comfortable with Arsenal’s attack, although he had a tough time with Tavares and Saka when he switched to his side.

Jamal Lascelles – 4/10

Arsenal’s first goal could have been avoided if Lascelles had been alert to the danger posed by Saka. Instead of shutting down the attacker, the defender chose to raise his hand and call the flag when Saka played to the side. The poor decision-making shown by Newcastle needed defensive upgrades in January.

Fabian Schar – 5/10

Poor display from the seasoned defender, who got in big trouble by Tomiyasu and Saka by his side, despite Aubameyang on a day off.

Matt Ritchie – 5/10

I found it difficult to face Tomiyasu and Saka on the side. While Odegaard was also on the right for most parts which only exacerbated his problems. He couldn’t stand the pressure at times and was later replaced after being booked.

Ryan Fraser – 5/10

Fraser’s strength lies in placing the ball in the penalty area, which he barely did throughout the match. On top of that, he was frustrated by Tavares’ pace and movements, and he always seemed nervous on the wing.

Joe Willock – 5/10

It was not the return he had envisioned. Willock was poor from the start because he lacked the ideas to advance the ball or control in midfield. Moreover, he received a crucial free kick near the penalty area, which could have been fatal if Odegaard executed it correctly.

Jonjo Shelvey – 6/10

Shelvey played some progressive passes when he was with the ball and shot a rebound to the net which Ramsdale saved fantastically. Beyond that, players like Lokonga and Partey were kept silent during the match.

Alain Saint-Maximin – 4/10

It hardly had any effect on the game. Saint-Maximin found it difficult to bypass Tomiyasu, who was expertly controlling his ward, with White’s help. The Frenchman was expected to play a major role in this game, and instead suffered on a quiet afternoon.

Wellington – 4/10

Bad outing for Wellington, who looked bright in the last games. He couldn’t get past Arsenal’s defense as Gabriel and Ben White dominated their territory superbly.

Callum Wilson – 5/10

Wilson was not even allowed to sniff the goal by Gabriel, who handled the striker’s physical presence well. He shouted for the penalty before Arsenal’s second goal, as he was in fact in a good position to score rather than hold back after minimal contact from Tavares.

Substitutes: Miguel Almiron – 5/10

Almiron was sent in to save something from the match he had already lost to Newcastle. He could not influence the proceedings.

Jacob Murphy – 5/10

Another substitution was made in an attempt to skin the game as Murphy came in to replace the ineffective Wellington.
