A young Kurdish woman who drowned Wednesday in the English Channel did not tell her fiancé she was about to take a boat to cross, until the last minute.

The 24-year-old – also known as Maryam – died along with 26 others, when their weakened raft encountered difficulties in transit.

The incident caused renewed political differences on both sides of the canal.

Speaking at the family home in Soran, northern Iraq, Baran’s cousin and childhood friend told Sky News how much the two adored each other and that she wanted to join him in Europe.

“They loved each other very much, they were love birds,” Iman Hassan told us.

“I’ve never seen anyone like them before. I used to say to my husband, ‘Look at him, I buy roses like him!’ They loved each other and were very respectful of each other.”

The last GPS position of the boat was shown, halfway between Calais and the Kent coast. That was the moment when her fiancé, who had been tracking her journey, realized that something had happened.

He said, “My last memories with her that will stay in my head forever is that we were at Erbil International Airport. The last time I said goodbye and hugged her was.

“Baran was loved in the family and in general. Anyone who had ever seen or met her once could not forget her for sure, they could not. And for me, she was a sister and a friend. I am very sad that she left with such a tragic accident. “

Despite their loss, the family showed no sign of anger or blame. Baran’s father said God took her and explained why she wanted to go to the UK.
