50 homes evacuated in Derby after man arrested on suspicion of making explosives | my derby

A man has been arrested on suspicion of making or possessing an explosive in Derby, as more than 50 homes in the area have been evacuated.

Derbyshire Police said the man remains in police custody, but there is no indication that it is a terrorism-related incident. The military was on the scene after officers executed an arrest warrant on King Alfred Street, Normanton, at about 11:30 a.m. Sunday.

The force’s statement said: “The explosive ordnance disposal team is present at the site and a number of homes are currently being evacuated on King Alfred Street, Monk Street and Wolfa Street.

“Residents are being asked to stay away from the area and evacuees will be contacted when it is safe to return to their homes.”

In a later update, the force said the incident is likely to continue into the evening as officers work with the EOD team.

There is no indication when residents will return home.

She continued: “The force is in contact with Derby City Council to assist those who need temporary accommodation while they are currently unable to reach their homes.

“Evacuated residents will be contacted as soon as it is safe to return.”

Ch Sopt Tracy Lewis said: “I would first like to thank everyone for their support and understanding during today’s incident.

“It is at the forefront of our minds the safety of everyone in the area as well as the staff at the scene, and I know they are working hard to allow people to return as quickly as possible to do so safely.

I also understand that people will be concerned by the eviction and I would like to assure them that there is no indication at this time that this is a terrorism related incident.

A man was arrested on suspicion of making or possessing an explosive and officers from the force are continuing their investigations into the incident.

“I would urge anyone with any information that may be of interest to the investigation team to contact the force.”
