New York Red Bulls coach Gerhard Strooper says he turned down the opportunity to join old team-mate Ralph Rangnick at Manchester United.
Rangnick, 63, was appointed as interim manager at United last week. He revealed in his first press conference that he is looking for some new employees. Michael Carrick’s decision to move away from Old Trafford caused the German coaching staff to run out and he was given permission to add some new faces.
And according to The Sun, he used connections from his connections with Salzburg and Leipzig to go after Austrian coach Strober.
Strooper and Rangnick forged a strong working relationship in the Red Bull environment. Rangnick was sporting director at RB Salzburg between 2012 and 2015, while he was in a similar role at Leipzig until 2018. Meanwhile, Strober joined Salzburg as youth coach in 2014 before becoming assistant manager in 2015 for one season.
Furthermore, Strober then returned to the youth teams of Salzburg in 2018.
This means that the couple has real respect for each other. But it doesn’t look like Strooper is coming to Manchester.
Chris Armas is set to play at Old Trafford. The 49-year-old worked as an assistant coach for the Chicago Fire and New York Red Bulls.
He was then promoted to head coach in New York and reached the playoffs twice. Then he worked alongside Rangnick in the Big Apple.
However, Strooper will not arrive, he does not think now is the right time to leave New York.

Strooper reveals “Request”
“There was a request. It’s no secret that Ralph Rangnick and we know each other well, and appreciate each other,” Strober told Sky Sports Austria’s ‘Talk & Tore’ via the Manchester Evening News.
“I am honored to be requested by England. At the same time, the situation for me in New York allows me to look to the future with great hope. I don’t want to give up the road with New York overnight,” Strooper explained.
“I am very committed to the team in New York and we have big plans. I have a long-term contract in New York that I want to keep. I have big goals with an ambitious team.
“I settled well in New York, had a hard time with my team and really grew up together. It would be the wrong time to say goodbye here.
“I feel very comfortable in my current role as head coach and I believe I can make the most impact in this position. That is why I want to continue in this path.”
