What will Max Verstappen do to win his first world championship in Formula 1? “Whatever is necessary” according to the Dutch driver – although he said any idea of a title fight between him and Lewis Hamilton that was settled by a collision in Sunday’s Abu Dhabi Grand Prix final was an invention of the media.
Verstappen lost to Hamilton last time out at the Saudi Arabian Grand Prix, as the pair experienced several heated moments on the track as they battled at the Jeddah Corniche circuit before Hamilton finally passed and won the race, tying Verstappen on points.

If either driver fails to score this weekend, Verstappen’s nine to eight wins for Hamilton will give him the title. But after being asked, after their fiery fight in Saudi Arabia if he and Hamilton needed to sit down before the race to discuss ‘rules of engagement’, Verstappen replied: “I don’t think we need to sit down.
“You know, we’re both here to win and we’re going to do everything to win, and eventually win the championship – whatever is necessary of course in terms of points. I think we’ve raced really well together all year, and I think we put in a great show for everyone at the end of the day, so We hope, of course, to do the same here.”

When asked, meanwhile, about the possibility of a collision deciding the title fight, Verstappen replied curtly: “As a driver, you don’t think about these things. You go to the weekend where you just want to do your best as a team, and of course you try to win the race.”
“But it’s normal for the media to start saying these things, so I don’t have much to comment on. I think I get here just trying to do my best, trying to be the best prepared and of course trying to win this weekend.
“I know what’s in sports law,” Verstappen added. “No one needs to be reminded of that.”

Verstappen will recover before the title showdown with memories of his position at the front and his dominant victory here 12 months ago, a rare shining moment for the Dutch driver in the 2020 season who has often finished P3 behind Mercedes.
Perhaps due to Silver Arrows’ dominance last season, Verstappen said that whatever the outcome this weekend, he will be proud of the task he and Red Bull have undertaken to become title contenders in 2021.

“This season has been really fun,” Verstappen said, when asked if this was the biggest moment of his career so far. “I think after last year, I didn’t have much hope that we would be sitting here at the end of the season and fighting for the title, but I think we were very competitive from the start.
“We’ve had some good results, a bit of bad luck as well, but overall we can be really proud of the effort of the whole team, to sit here and fight for that title.”
