Manchester United’s Premier League match at home to Brighton on Saturday was postponed due to the Covid-19 outbreak at the club, but the Premier League intends to “safely continue its current schedule”.

The English Premier League has taken the decision to cancel the match based on “guidance from medical advisors” in the wake of the outbreak of the Corona virus between United and its backroom staff.

Training operations at the club’s Carrington complex have also been suspended “for a short period” to help reduce the risk of transmission.

A club statement read: “Manchester United can confirm that our Premier League match against Brighton, scheduled for Saturday 18th December at 12:30, has been postponed and will be rescheduled in due course.

“The health of players and staff is our priority. With the number of players and support staff having to isolate due to Covid-19, the club had no choice but to request a rescheduling of the match. The decision to postpone was taken by the Premier League’s board of directors based on guidance from medical advisors.

“We will also suspend football training operations at the Carrington Training Complex for a short period to help reduce the risk of transmission.

“We apologize for any disappointment and inconvenience to fans caused by the postponement.”

Manchester United’s trip to Brentford on Tuesday, Watford’s visit to Burnley and Leicester’s home game against Tottenham Hotspur are the other Premier League matches that have been canceled so far this week.

The postponement of United’s match against Brighton comes hours after Brentford boss Thomas Frank called the Premier League to suspend this weekend’s round of matches, as several top-flight clubs struggle to contain the Covid-19 outbreak.
