Adele, Ed Sheeran, Little Simz and Dave topped the largest field of nominations ever for the Brit Awards, with the ceremony moving beyond gender categories.
Each artist received four nominations, including in the new “Artist of the Year” category which replaced “British Male” and “British Female”, as well as for Album of the Year. New awards were added this year to highlight excellence in genres: alternative/rock, hip-hop/crime/rap, dance, and pop/rock & b.
The change in gender awards followed criticism of the 2021 ceremony by non-duo singer Sam Smith, whose gender identity means they cannot be nominated for either male or female artist awards. They said, “I look forward to a time when award shows can reflect the society we live in.”
British regulators responded that they were “committed to developing the show”, announced an advisory, and eventually revealed the changes last month. “It’s important that Brits continue to evolve and aim to be as inclusive as possible,” said Tom Marsh, co-chairman of Polydor Records and this year’s British President.
There was a risk that the repeal of the gender awards would skew the new mixed categories towards men, who have dominated some of the recent festivities — but more female solo artists and groups have been nominated this year than in any decade.

There are some familiar hit artists among the nominees – Dua Lipa appears in the Pop/R&B and Song of the Year categories despite very little new music being released – but there are also a number of freshmen. South Yorkshire pop singer Self Esteem, winner of Album and Song of the Year by Guardian critics, has been nominated for Best New Artist, along with Central Cee, Griff, Joy Crookes and – six years after her debut album – Little Sims. Self-esteem company AKA Rebecca Taylor said on Instagram: “Props to the Brits for representing a 35-year-old. We’re not just getting worn out!”
Central Cee earned three nominations overall on his British debut, capping a fantastic year for the 23-year-old rapper that saw him dominate the Mobo and Rated Awards for British black music, capping two top 10 hits. Veteran dance producer David Guetta has also been nominated three times, for his contributions to three joint effort dance tracks: Bed, Heartbreak Anthem, and Remember. Singer-songwriter Jordi Sam Fender also received three nominations, including Most Popular Artist of the Year and Album of the Year – he said he “felt totally confused and honored” to be honored.
There are a variety of artists in the running for Group of the Year, with four-time winners expanding their category nomination pool to nine, as well as rap duo D-Block Europe, indie rockers Wolf Alice, and Dream-poppers. London Grammar and Little Mix, which in 2021 became the first women’s group to win the award.
The International Artist Award, which once again replaced two different awards, was awarded to an all-American group by Taylor Swift, Olivia Rodrigo, Billie Eilish, Lil Nas X and Doga Cat.
The international group category is more widespread around the world, with ABBA – who were nominated for this award at the first ever British concert in 1977 – alongside Italian winners of Eurovision, Måneskin, K-pop megastars BTS, and American band AOR The War on Drugs, and Silk Sonic, the super nostalgic funk group formed by Bruno Mars and Anderson. Buck.
One British award has already been handed out: the Rising Star Award for New Talent, which was won by pop singer Holly Humberstone. Fender won this award in 2019; Griff, last year’s winner, earned two nominations elsewhere this year, as did former rising star Crocs, whose debut album Skin reached the top five in the UK.

The Producer and Songwriter of the Year Awards will be announced in January, ahead of the February 8 concert at the O2 Arena, presented for the first time by comedian Mo Gilligan, supported by Maya Jama and Clara Amfo. In all, there are 15 dedicated awards, the most in British history.
The awards are voted on by the Brits Academy, which includes musicians along with music industry and media figures, though genre categories will be voted on by audiences via TikTok. The nominees in this year’s song categories are determined by UK chart performance, but the winner is chosen by the Academy.
Adele is likely to quickly become a favorite in her four categories, having re-established herself alongside Ed Sheeran and Lipa as the UK’s biggest contemporary pop star. Her fourth album, 30, was released six years after her previous splits, 25, during which time she divorced her husband, Simon Konecki, the father of her son Angelo. Depicting relationship conflict and its aftermath in candid and emotionally typical terms, the album has been a huge hit since its release last month, becoming the best-selling album of the year in the US in just three days. If she wins all four of her categories, she will have the most BRIT awards ever along with Robbie Williams, with 13.
Sheeran will be keen to add to his six previous wins in the year he released his fifth album, =, and Dave will likely win Album of the Year for the second time in three years, after his debut in the psychological drama took home the award in 2020.
Joining them at the top table of British pop music, Little Simz marks her transition from a cult artist to a major star. The much-beloved rapper, celebrated for how she articulates a high level of self-researching lyrical skill, barely touched the UK charts with her first three albums, but reached the UK top five with her fourth, Sometimes I May Be An Introvert.
There’s no blatant disdain, though big stars Justin Bieber, Drake and the Weeknd were all hoping for an International Artist nomination.
