Germany is tightening travel restrictions from the UK in an effort to limit the spread of the Omicron variant of the coronavirus.

There will be a ban on transport from the UK to Germany, with the exception of German citizens, residents and passengers in transit.

Procedures will start from midnight on Sunday – or 11pm UK time.

Restrictions may last until at least January 3rd.

London Mayor Sadiq Khan had earlier declared a “major incident” in the capital due to the rapid spread of Omicron.

Mr Khan said: “The increase in Omicron variant cases across our capital is very worrying, so we are once again announcing a major incident due to the Covid-19 threat to our city.

“The Omicron variant is quickly becoming dominant with cases increasing rapidly and the number of patients in our hospitals with Covid-19 increasing again.

“We are already feeling the impact across the capital, and while we are still learning about this alternative, it is right that the major agencies in London are working closely together to reduce the impact on our city, including by helping to protect a vital vaccination programme.”

A further 90,418 laboratory-confirmed cases of Covid-19 were recorded in the UK as of 9am on Saturday.

Another 125 people died within 28 days of testing positive for Covid-19.
