Additional funding to tackle Covid-19 has been doubled across Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland.
Chancellor Rishi Sunak said the push was to ensure the support of people in mandated states “in the face of this serious health crisis”.
This came on the heels of escalating demands for more monetary support from the three countries amid rising Omicron cases.
The total amount has been doubled from the recently announced £430m to £860m.
Of this amount, £440 million has been allocated to the Scottish Government, the Welsh Government £270 million, and the Northern Ireland Executive £150 million.
The Treasury said the amounts, as well as fall budget funding for states that have been delegated, will remain under review.
Mr. Sunak said: “After discussions with the delegated departments, we are now doubling the additional funding available.
“We will continue to listen to and work with the delegated departments in the face of this serious health crisis, to ensure we get reinforcement for people across the UK and support for people in Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland.”
The funding announcement came after Michelle O’Neill said modeling presented to ministers suggested that in a worst-case scenario, NI could experience 30,000 omicron cases per day.
It also came after Scotland’s first minister, Nicola Sturgeon, said the UK government’s initial offer of 220 million pounds to help fight the Corona virus had left the country with millions of pounds in a worse position.
After the Cobra meeting on Wednesday, Scotland’s chancellor, Kate Forbes, wrote to Sunak urging him to take more action to help deal with the impact of the variable Omicron, calling the £220m amount “completely inappropriate”.
In response to the latest funding announcement on Sunday, Ms Sturgeon tweeted to warn against “spinning on the ‘double'” and insisted they ‘still need more urgency’ in action and support from Westminster so that the hands of devolved governments are not tied.
It also described it as “disappointed and disappointed” that neither Boris Johnson nor Mr Sunak attended the Cobra meeting with the relocated nations Sunday night.
