Two monkeys who allegedly killed hundreds of puppies have been arrested in the Indian state of Maharashtra.
Villagers in Lavol village, Bid district of Maharastra, reported langurs after seeing them engage in what appeared to be targeted killing of neighborhood dogs by kidnapping them and taking them to deadly heights.
The villagers claimed that the monkeys were carrying out “revenge killings” after dogs killed a baby monkey.
“In the past two to three months, there have been incidents where a roaming langur in the area has been hunting puppies and taking them to a place of great height to throw them from there. At least 250 dogs have been killed so far,” a villager told ANI news agency.
The monkeys reportedly left dogs on roofs and trees where they died from lack of food and water, and in other incidents they would be tossed and killed. Locals said the monkeys were so delicate that there were no small dogs left in Lavol village.
An official from the district office said there was no evidence that the monkeys’ actions were motivated by revenge.
“this is [the killing of an infant monkey by dogs] He is said to have angered the monkeys who killed the dogs in response to the locals. But we have no evidence to support this theory. It’s animal behavior and we can’t be sure why they’re behaving this way.”
Villagers reported the animals to the forest department after the monkeys allegedly began harassing local children.
The local forest department confirmed that they had arrested the alleged perpetrators, who will be released in a nearby forest.
“Two monkeys involved in killing dogs have been arrested by the Nagpur Forest Management Team in Bid,” forest officer Sachin Kand told local media.
The incident spread widely across social media in India, prompting the “monkey-versus-dog guerrilla war” to start a trend.
