The end of free lateral flow tests as the country asked to live with Covid | News

[ad_1]

Free lateral flow tests face the ax under plans to live with Covid that Boris Johnson will announce within weeks.

More than £6 billion of public money has been spent on mass testing with the devices.

The new system could mean offering free tests only in high-risk settings such as nursing homes, hospitals, schools and people with symptoms. Contact tracing is also likely to be scaled back by the NHS Test and Trace.

A senior Whitehall source said, “I don’t think we’re in a world where we can continue to offer free lateral flow testing to everyone forever. We will probably move to a scenario where there is less testing but we have the potential to increase that scenario.
